Program Director-Watchdog Writers Group University of Missouri-Columbia parental leave, paid time off United States, Missouri, Columbia 801 Conley Avenue (Show on map) May 23, 2026 Hiring Department Department of Journalism Job Description The Watchdog Writers Group is seeking an accomplished journalist to serve as Program Director, leading its student mentoring and training initiatives while supporting organizational fundraising efforts. This role follows WWG's distinctive "player/coach" leadership model, requiring an active, practicing journalist who brings both professional experience and a commitment to developing the next generation of reporters. Candidates with a background in investigative journalism and a demonstrated record of publishing long-form articles or books are strongly preferred. Key Responsibilities Program Leadership & Development Design and implement comprehensive training and mentorship programs for WWG Student Reporters
Develop and deliver skills-building workshops, seminars, and structured learning experiences
Provide individualized mentorship and oversee job-training opportunities
Manage and continuously improve program operations once established
Lead annual efforts to recruit and enroll student participants Mentorship & Editorial Collaboration Actively participate in WWG fellowship activities
Collaborate with writers and fellows to support the development of articles, investigative projects, and book-length works
Foster a culture of excellence, curiosity, and journalistic integrity Fundraising & Program Support Play a key role in fundraising initiatives to sustain and expand WWG programs
Support efforts to secure funding for student reporter activities and the full-time Summer Reporting Workshop
Engage with donors, partners, and stakeholders to advance WWG's mission Shift Monday-Friday 8-5p.m., Some nights and weekends may be required. Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 6 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Preferred Qualifications Active, practicing journalist with significant professional experience
Strong preference for investigative reporting background
Proven record of publishing long-form journalism (articles and/or books)
Demonstrated passion for mentoring and developing emerging journalists
Experience designing or leading training, educational, or professional development programs is highly desirable
Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
Anticipated Hiring Range Salary Range:
$78,000-$82,000/yearGrade:
