Job Description

Construction Project Accountant Wagner Construction has been in business since 1951. We have been performing construction services in a variety of different sectors including underground utilities, site development, forestry, commercial/industrial building, heavy civil, and transportation. Position Summary The Construction Project Accountant is responsible for protecting the Company, enforcing financial discipline, and ensuring project-related documentation, approvals, commitments, and payments comply with Company policy and contractual requirements. This role manages the project accounting functions for assigned construction projects, including tracking costs, maintaining budgets, processing commitments, supporting invoicing, administering change orders, and providing accurate financial reporting. The Construction Project Accountant works closely with Project Managers and other stakeholders to support project profitability, maintain financial accuracy, and identify potential risks. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Develop and maintain project budgets, cost reports, and financial tracking tools for assigned projects. Monitor project costs against budget and identify variances or areas requiring attention. Measure and evaluate physical revenue compared to financial revenue. Accurately record all project-related costs, including labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, and overhead. Ensure all project-related financial transactions are recorded completely and timely. Prepare and issue subcontracts in alignment with prime contract requirements and Company procedures. Maintain subcontract files, including compliance documents, supporting backup, and subcontract change orders. Prepare and issue purchase orders for project-related needs and maintain all supporting records, change orders, and compliance documentation. Prepare, issue, track, and maintain owner, subcontract, and purchase order change orders from initiation through execution. Ensure all change orders are properly documented, approved, issued, and reflected in project records. Review and process vendor and subcontractor invoices for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with contract terms and Company policy. Support preparation and submission of customer invoices based on project progress and contractual requirements. Generate regular cost and financial reports for Project Managers and senior leadership, including variance analysis, project status reporting, profit and loss reporting, key performance indicators, and cash flow projections. Analyze project financial data to identify trends, risks, and variances, and provide recommendations based on findings. Administer project-specific Contractor Controlled Insurance Program (CCIP) requirements for assigned projects, including subcontractor and Company enrollment and onboarding. Understand and interpret construction contracts to ensure compliance with contractual terms and financial requirements. Collaborate with Project Managers, estimators, and other stakeholders to provide financial insight and support project decision-making. Ensure adherence to accounting standards, internal controls, and applicable regulations. Related Responsibilities Maintain accurate project records, logs, and supporting documentation. Support internal reviews and audits by preparing requested project financial documentation. Assist in improving project accounting processes, controls, and reporting accuracy. Maintain positive working relationships with project teams, subcontractors, vendors, and internal departments. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Skills and Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred. Strong understanding of construction accounting principles and practices. Experience with project cost tracking, job costing, subcontract administration, purchase order administration, and invoice processing. Proficiency with construction accounting and project management software. Understanding of construction processes, project phases, and industry standards. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with project teams and management. High attention to detail, organization, and accuracy. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Typical office environment with regular computer use. May require occasional visits to active construction sites. Ability to sit for extended periods and perform repetitive office tasks. $80,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
