Project Engineer

Job Summary:

The Preconstruction Project Engineer plays a key role in Alexander & Bebout's preconstruction process, with a primary focus on estimating. This role is ideal for someone early in their construction career—or transitioning into construction—who understands the basics of construction and has a strong interest in estimating and preconstruction. This position is responsible for managing small project estimates from start to finish while supporting larger pursuits through takeoffs, bid coordination, estimate preparation, and proposal development. This individual will work closely with the Preconstruction Director, Lead Estimator, Designers, and Project Managers to ensure accurate, timely, and well-documented estimates that support successful project outcomes. Key Responsibilities:

Estimating & Preconstruction Prepare complete estimates for small projects from invitation to bid through proposal submission Perform quantity takeoffs and pricing using drawings, specifications, and conceptual documents Assist development of detailed estimate scopes, assumptions, and clarifications Assist with conceptual, schematic, and budget-level estimates Support bid leveling, subcontractor comparisons, and scope reviews Maintain organized estimate files and documentation Bid & Proposal Management Manage invitations to bid, including subcontractor outreach and follow-up Coordinate receipt of bids and assist with bid tabulation and leveling Prepare proposal documents in collaboration with sales and preconstruction leadership Assist with preliminary schedules and pricing narratives Coordination & Communication Collaborate with Preconstruction team to define scope and constructability Communicate with subcontractors, vendors, and internal teams to support accurate pricing Participate in internal handoff meetings from preconstruction to operations Support client-facing preconstruction efforts as needed Systems & Document Management Assist in maintenance of estimating databases, templates, and historical cost data Organize drawings, specifications, addenda, and correspondence Support continuous improvement of preconstruction processes and tools

Required Skills:

• Basic understanding of construction means, methods, and sequencing
• Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings
• Excellent organizational, analytical, and time management skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
• Self-motivated, disciplined, and proactive with strong follow-through
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment

Preferred Skills:

Construction Knowledge Construction Degree Experience with construction software (Bluebeam, Estimating Software, Microsoft Project)

Position Qualifications:

• Coursework, internship, OR hands-on experience in construction or related fields.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.
• Salary based on experience.

Pay:

$60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
