Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Assistant Public Works Director, the Maintenance Technician I performs labor that is simple/laborer to semi-skilled and as a member of a work team. The Goddard Public Works Department operations include, but are not limited to: Streets, Parks, Sewer, Water, Storm Water and Building/Facilities Maintenance. Maintenance Technicians will work in all operational areas as needed with assignments made by supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned. Maintain a safe working environment. Includes wearing appropriate safe clothing, erecting proper barricades and signage when necessary, and using equipment and materials properly Completes work orders, daily activity reports, inspection reports, and time sheets; maintains maintenance and service records/logs, and other pertinent information. Cleans, lubricates, and performs preventive maintenance or repair on equipment. Safely utilize a variety of hand and power tools. Inspect and restore equipment fluid levels including oil, fuel, water, and transmission fluid. Lubricate equipment as needed; report any necessary repairs on equipment; lockout/tagout unsafe equipment. Works extended hours as required to accommodate needs of the department or organization including shifts during 24/7 operations in emergencies. Actively participate in winter storm preparation and snow removal during snow/ice conditions using sand/salt applications and snow removal with backhoes/tractors/ and dump trucks The ability to be on-call at all hours of day and night (including holidays), as well as the ability to be placed into an on-call rotation with other Public Works employees. Street Department Duties Safely operates light and heavy equipment, machinery, and tools for maintenance and construction related operations in various weather conditions. Perform general road maintenance and related activities including flagging traffic, mowing, temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repair and pouring, clearing brush and trees, vegetation control, sweeping, routing and sealing road cracks, and removing dead animals and trash. Maintain street signage. Assist in the mowing/maintenance of public right-of-way and property as needed. Building and Facility Maintenance Duties Perform minor building and equipment maintenance including but not limited to rough carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting in all City-owned buildings. Perform as-needed custodial duties at City-owned facilities including but not limited to PW, WWTP, City Hall, Library, Community Center, and City Pool. Care for impounded animals at the Public Works yard. Maintain City-owned facility grounds and landscaping. Assist in the set-up of City events such as National Night Out and Goddard Fall Fest. Water Utility Duties Perform water and sewer utility locates as requested through the utilization of the Kansas One-Call system Read water meters using electronic read system and also manual reads Monitor, repair, and maintain City water wells, water tower, and adjoining grounds Install new water service and fire hydrants Monitor, maintain, and repair and service leaks or emergency water main leaks as needed Interact with customers when performing water shut-offs and turn-ons. Check City generators to ensure proper operations in case of emergency Perform daily water testing. Wastewater Utility Duties While working in the wastewater operations, guidance and direction will be given by the
Stormwater and Sewer Collection Technician:
Inspects new sewer service installation. Unblock, flush, repair, and locate sewer lines. Monitor system for sewer backups and check sewer catching systems. Inspect and repair sewer manholes as necessary. Monitor, repair, and maintain City lift stations.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or GED. One year of laborer, construction, maintenance or related work. Kansas Class C Driver's License.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Training or experience in construction equipment and tool operation.
REQUIRED JOB COMPETENCIES
Knowledge of operation and maintenance of assigned equipment and machinery including hydraulic systems, trailers, towing, fastening and covering of loads, lifting capacities and proper loading to meet safe and efficient weight distributions. Drive and operate equipment in a safe and proper manner. Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures. Safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites. Ability to work as a member of a team and establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions. Understand and apply situational awareness of surroundings to prevent accidents and promote safety of crew and members of the public. Apply sound judgment and discretion in performing duties, resolving problems, and interpreting policies and regulations. Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations. Read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. Prepare and maintain accurate and concise records and reports. Maintain professionalism at all times. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with courtesy and tact when in contact with supervisors, department heads, the public, and other City employees. Ability to maintain regular, reliable, prompt and predictable on-site job attendance. Ability to work allocated hours which may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
