Job Description

The Food Scientist will perform food/nutraceutical product development activities including the creation, evaluation, and testing of prototypes and production samples, applying scientific principles and technical expertise to ensure a successful introduction to the market. Responsible for documenting ingredients, formulas, processes, testing, and specifications involved with new product research and development or enhancements to existing products. This role will report to the Director of Operations.
Job Responsibilities:
Lead the development and commercialization of high-quality functional food & nutraceutical products, including benchtop formulation/development and scale-up via plant trials and startup. Combine a culinary/flavor-first approach with technical considerations including food safety, food stability/shelf-life, manufacturing feasibility and compatibility with HPP, cost, nutrition, etc. Identify, explore, and qualify cost-optimization opportunities within ingredients, formula, and manufacturing process. Organize and execute product tastings for sensory evaluation, shelf life studies, and product stability. Participate and provide input in team product tastings. Generate and maintain internal and external product specifications and nutritional information. Support Operations and QA on troubleshooting product issues or testing/implementing process improvements. Work with ingredient suppliers and internal Procurement to source, qualify, and/or select appropriate raw materials. Assist in the production (and shipment, as needed) of samples for customer requests. Perform analytical analyses on ingredients and finished products Assist in batching, analytical testing, flavor screening, stocking materials, and maintaining a clean and orderly lab. Maintain R&D records, using electronic systems and written protocols. Comply with all Company rules, regulations and policies. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Additional Skills:
Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Chemical/Biological Sciences, or other related field. 3+ years of work experience in food product development/manufacturing, with experience from benchtop development through scale-up preferred. Ability to apply scientific principles and technical expertise, and leverage internal and external resources, for technical problem solving and/or scientific advances. Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks and work in a fast-paced environment while making sound decisions. Ability to work independently, take initiative, and meet deadlines without close supervision. Receptive to new ideas, concepts, and procedures, and able to contribute in these areas. High degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Collaborative, solutions-oriented, and organized. Excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills. Proficient in MS Office. Experience with Genesis or other nutrition labeling software preferred. Knowledge of Food Manufacturing, SQF, HACCP, and GMPs.
Physical Requirements:
Able to communicate information accurately to others. Able to detect and discern sounds accurately in order to exchange information. Able to stand for extended periods, walk, move throughout workspace frequently, and use hands to reach, find, handle, and manipulate items. Able to observe details at close range, perceive colored images, and perceive computer generated images on a screen. Able to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally.
