Job Description

Description:
Under general supervision of higher-ranking officers, responds to fire, rescue, medical, and storm response alarms and other emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance to protect life and property; performs fire suppression and EMS duties; may drive and operate fire apparatus and other associated equipment; and does other related work as required. Employees within this classification are required to perform heavy physical and mentally challenging work in arduous environments while responding to all-hazard emergency incidents. Their ability to function individually and work/live cohesively in a team environment, ensuring their own health and safety as well as that of their coworkers and the general public is paramount. They must be able to respond to an evolving and dynamic emergency situation, respond quickly to oral commands and signals, follow written directions, work safely with others and exercise good judgment. They must be able to safely operate department vehicles and equipment. Continuous physical and formal manipulative training under simulated emergency conditions is also performed. They must be able to lift, carry and hike with a variety of hand tools and rescue equipment, transporting them to an emergency location, which may be remote, and utilize them to address any emergency. The tools and equipment routinely weigh in excess of 70 pounds (wildland ensemble including hose) to 100 pounds (structural ensemble with self-contained breathing apparatus {SCBA} and ladder). They are regularly exposed to arduous conditions including extreme weather and temperatures, challenging topography, heavy smoke, hazardous materials including biohazards, sun radiation, poison oak, and other hazards as required. In addition to responding to emergency incidents, employees must perform vegetation reduction projects, facility and equipment maintenance, general housekeeping, and kitchen duties. The individual must maintain a high level of physical fitness to successfully perform the rigorous duties of their assignment. The individual must have sufficient strength, stamina, dexterity and agility to perform repetitive gripping, lifting, balancing, bending, stooping, squatting, running, walking, climbing, jumping and twisting. Employee must be capable of pushing and pulling with both upper and lower extremities, bilaterally. The individual must have the ability to remain on duty for a 24-hour shift. Additionally, the employee is expected to respond to multiple incidents during a scheduled shift which may result in repetitive sleep disturbance. Established sleep and meal schedules may fluctuate or be disrupted based upon incident activity or operational needs. The nature of emergency response results in an inability to decompress between/during incidents which could have a cumulative effect upon the individual. Use of equipment such as SCBA and the necessity to work in intense environments may also place a physiological burden on the employee. The all-hazard emergency response mission exposes employees to emotionally charged situations for which emotional resiliency is required. The employee must be capable of maintaining professional and cooperative relations and interactions inside and outside of the department.
