Job Description

About Viking Hospice Care Viking Hospice Care is a Medicare and Medicaid certified, CHAP accredited, independently owned hospice agency serving the greater Houston metropolitan area, including Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria, and surrounding counties. We are in the early growth stage of our development, built on the belief that independent, locally owned agencies deliver better, more personalized care than large corporate hospice chains. Our clinical team is led by experienced hospice nurses with decades of combined experience in Houston healthcare. We are committed to compassionate, family centered end of life care with an emphasis on clinical excellence, rapid response to referrals, and strong physician partnership. The Opportunity This is the first dedicated business development hire at Viking Hospice Care. As an early-stage organization, this role carries both significant responsibility and significant opportunity. You will own our referral development function, work directly with leadership, and play a meaningful role in shaping how Viking grows in the Houston market. Because we are a startup, this role asks for more than a standard community liaison position. You will contribute beyond a fixed job description, adapt as the organization evolves, and bring the initiative and flexibility that early-stage companies depend on. If you thrive on autonomy, ownership, and building something from the ground up, you will find this role genuinely rewarding. Role Overview You are the face and voice of Viking Hospice Care to the referral community across greater Houston. Your primary responsibility is to generate patient admissions by building and maintaining relationships with hospital discharge planners, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, primary care physicians, oncologists, and other referral sources. This is a field-based role. Most of your time will be spent in person, visiting referral partners and developing the relationships that produce consistent referrals over time. The rest is dedicated to follow-up, internal reporting, event coordination, and close collaboration with our clinical team. Our current growth priority is West Houston, Sugar Land, Katy, Missouri City, and Fort Bend County. We serve and actively seek referrals from all areas of greater Houston, and candidates with established relationships anywhere in the Houston metro are encouraged to apply. Key Responsibilities Build and maintain active relationships with hospital discharge planners, SNF social workers, ALF directors, primary care physicians, oncologists, and other referral sources across the Houston metro area Generate patient referrals through consistent in-person visits, professional follow-up, and genuine relationship development Coordinate with the clinical team so referrals are handled quickly and admissions proceed smoothly, supporting the referral partner experience from first contact through admission Track all referral activity, pipeline status, and admission conversions, and provide weekly reporting to leadership Plan and host community education events, including in-service presentations, lunch and learns, and hospice awareness programs that establish Viking as a trusted clinical resource Develop and distribute professional marketing materials, including service overviews, educational content, and referral resources Identify new referral opportunities and expand our network proactively across the Houston market Represent Viking Hospice Care professionally at community events, health fairs, and industry meetings Contribute to broader organizational initiatives as needed in a startup environment Required Qualifications Active, transferable referral relationships in the Houston market. This is the primary qualification for this role. You must have existing relationships with hospital discharge planners, SNF social workers, or physician practices in the Houston area that you are prepared to leverage immediately. We are looking for someone who can engage referral sources and generate admissions within the first 30 to 60 days. Candidates without established Houston referral relationships will not be considered. Minimum 2 years of business development or community liaison experience in hospice, palliative care, or home health, with a demonstrated understanding of the Houston referral landscape Proven track record of driving patient admissions, with the ability to speak to specific results from previous roles Ability to operate independently, manage a territory without close supervision, and take full ownership of outcomes Comfort with a startup environment, including evolving processes, broad responsibilities, and a lean team structure Strong professional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage credibly with physicians, discharge planners, and clinical staff Valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle for regular field travel throughout the Houston area Preferred Qualifications Established relationships specifically in West Houston, Sugar Land, Katy, Missouri City, or Fort Bend County Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish Experience in a startup, early-stage, or independently owned hospice or home health organization Experience building a referral network from a low or zero census starting point Compensation and Benefits Viking Hospice Care offers a competitive, transparent compensation package designed to attract experienced professionals and reward strong performance. This is a W-2 employee position by design. Employing you directly lets us reward your production while keeping our compensation structure squarely inside federal healthcare rules. Base Salary $65,000 to $80,000 Set by experience and the strength of your existing referral relationships Performance Bonus Uncapped Tied to admitted census growth and business development results, reviewed and paid quarterly On-Target Earnings $115,000 to $135,000 With real upside above target as census grows Schedule Self-managed, field-based Results driven, not activity driven Your bonus is tied to the census you help build, so your earnings grow directly with your results. On-target performers earn between $115,000 and $135,000, and because the bonus is uncapped, strong producers can earn more as Viking grows. Bonus criteria and targets are defined clearly in writing at the start of each year. Additional benefits include paid time off and mileage reimbursement for field travel. Why Join Viking Hospice Care Ownership of the role. As our first business development hire, you will have complete ownership of the referral development function and direct input into how we grow. Direct access to leadership. We are a small, lean organization. You will work directly with decision-makers, not through layers of management. Clinical quality that supports your relationships. Our nursing team is experienced and committed to excellent care. The service your referral partners receive will reinforce the relationships you build. Uncapped earnings. Your income grows directly with your admissions. There is no ceiling on what you can earn based on your individual performance. Career growth potential. As Viking grows, there is a genuine opportunity to expand your role, take on leadership responsibilities, and grow with the organization over the long term.
