About the Role An established Southern California commercial HVAC contractor with almost three decades in business is hiring a Service Manager to run its service division as a business. This is not a senior technician role with a management title. The right person understands commercial HVAC and the business behind it: what a job costs, how to price it profitably, how to build recurring revenue, and how to win and keep commercial customers. You'll lead a team of service technicians and a dispatcher. There is no separate estimator, so you will personally price, quote and close repair and replacement work. What You'll Own Division Performance Accountable for service revenue, gross margin and job profitability Track and act on the key metrics: utilization and billable hours, overtime, callbacks and warranty costs, quote close rate, and maintenance agreement growth Identify variances and take corrective action to hit annual targets Sales and Recurring Revenue Develop new commercial accounts and expand existing customers and the installed equipment base Grow and renew preventive maintenance agreements as the foundation for repair and replacement work Maintain an active pipeline with disciplined follow-up on every open proposal Decide which work to pursue and which to decline. Volume that doesn't make money isn't growth. Pricing and Estimating Prepare estimates for repairs and equipment replacements, priced to target profitability Use job-costing results to sharpen future pricing Team and Productivity Lead, coach and hold technicians and the dispatcher accountable for safety, quality, productivity and documentation Build a process for technicians to identify and report repair, replacement and upgrade opportunities in the field Recommend staffing based on sustainable demand, without adding labor faster than the department can support profitably Operations Make sure PM and service work is completed on schedule and promptly closed for billing, so revenue doesn't stall in the workflow Coordinate with safety, fleet, warehouse and HR Technical Leadership Provide escalation support on complex issues and develop technicians' troubleshooting skills Strong technical credibility is required, but this role is not an additional field technician What You Bring Experience running a commercial HVAC service department, branch or book of business with responsibility for revenue and profitability A measurable track record of profitable growth: revenue, margin, close rate or agreement growth Commercial HVAC estimating and sales experience Working knowledge of job costing, pricing and department financials Strong technical knowledge across a range of commercial HVAC systems The ability to lead, develop and hold a field team accountable EPA 608 Universal Certification and a valid California driver's license BuildOps or similar field service management software experience (preferred) A college degree is not required. Demonstrated results matter more. Schedule Primarily Monday through Friday. You must be available for after-hours management and technical escalation when necessary. This is not a routine after-hours field position. Compensation & Benefits $110,000-$140,000 base salary, depending on experience Performance bonus based on department profitability and growth Medical, dental and vision insurance, paid 100% for the employee 401(k) with a 4% company match Paid vacation, holidays and sick leave Company vehicle, fuel card, phone, iPad and computer To Apply Submit your resume and a brief description of a commercial HVAC service operation you've personally managed. Include, where possible, its annual revenue, your responsibility for margin, your typical quote close rate, and your personal role in estimating and selling. We're looking for a manager who has built a profitable commercial service operation, not simply supervised one.
