Job Description
The Contractor's Equipment Co. General Manager is responsible for leading, managing, and optimizing all equipment-related operations within Contractors Equipment Co. (CEC). This high-impact role involves strategic planning, financial oversight, team leadership, and ensuring that availability, reliability, and safe operations of the entire equipment fleet to meet project demands. The successful candidate will drive customer service excellence, efficiency, cost control, and foster a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to lead and manage equipment yard operations in Oregon and Washington State (travel required).
You will be responsible for:
Customer Service- Foster a customer-first service environment within the operations that prioritizes customer needs and project success. Strategic & Financial Management
- Develop and execute strategic plans for the equipment division, manage P&L performance, develop and track budgets, develop and optimize Billing Systems and Rates, and provide regular reports to executive leadership on key performance indicators, project status, and financial performance.
- Oversee the full lifecycle of the equipment fleet, including needs assessment, procurement, maintenance, utilization tracking, and disposal. Implement effective management systems to ensure equipment is in optimal working condition and compliant with safety standards. Strategic Procurement
- Conduct needs assessments, vendor negotiations and manage compliance and documentation. Asset Tracking and Inventory Management
- Implement and maintain an inventory system to track construction materials and consumables; location, condition and usage of all equipment, tools, and assets; document the full lifecycle of each asset, including acquisition, maintenance, upgrades, and eventual disposition. Disposition of Assets
- Develop and execute procedures for the proper disposal, sale, or recycling of outdated, non-functional, or surplus equipment; maximize value recovery from disposed assets; ensure all disposals are documented and comply with legal, environmental, and financial standards. Cost Segregation & Asset Classification
- Conduct detailed reviews to properly identify and classify assets for depreciation and tax purposes. Maintenance & Safety Oversight
- Develop and implement comprehensive preventative maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend asset life. Risk Management & Compliance
- Monitor and respond to external risks such as labor constraints, supply chain issues, commodity escalation, and regulatory changes. Vendor & Inventory Coordination
- Maintain strong relationships with local equipment dealers and vendors to ensure optimal support, pricing, and warranty recovery. Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team, including maintenance staff, technicians, and yard personnel. Problem Solving & Communication
- Act as a technical advisor to staff and collaborate with various departments. Continuous Improvement Initiatives
- Lead efforts to refine operational processes, implement best practices, and drive \"relentless follow-through\" on strategic and business plan initiatives. Client & Stakeholder Relationships
- Foster strong relationships not only with vendors but also with clients and other stakeholders.
Specific Job Skills:
Advanced Technical Knowledge Deep understanding of construction equipment operation, maintenance, and repair, including heavy equipment and specialized machinery. Deep understanding of construction tools and materials, procurement, and inventory management. Familiarity with asset management principles, equipment economics, and lifecycle cost analysis. Experience with equipment tracking, inventory control, and asset utilization systems. Project Management Proficiency Proven ability to plan, execute, and finalize projects within strict deadlines and budgets. Skilled in scheduling, resource allocation, and prioritization of multiple projects simultaneously. Management and Technical Skills Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Proven financial and business acumen, including P&L responsibility. Experience managing equipment budgets, identifying salvage value, and monitoring asset depreciation. Equipment, Tools and Material Billing Management Systems experience and regular optimization of rates. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate a team. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Viewpoint, equipment/inventory management, and tracking software is required. Skilled in negotiation and contract management for equipment procurement and disposition. Skilled in negotiation and contract management with tool and material manufacturers and distributors. In-depth knowledge of safety regulations and best practices. Experience in training staff on equipment usage and safety procedures. Skilled in staging and logistics of construction equipment and materials on and off-site locations. Experience in efficiently managing and maintaining storage, lay-down yard, and warehouse facilities. Ability to read, speak, write and understand English. Ability to do basic math. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions. Ability to multitask, stay organized, and maintain a strong attention to detail. Physical ability to use telephone, operate computer and keyboard and sit for continuous periods of time. Skilled at working with a variety of people at different levels while maintaining a strong customer focus. Capacity to work in both team and independent environments. Use discretion as needed with confidential/sensitive information.You are qualified if:
You have a bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (preferred), or equivalent experience. You have a minimum of three to five years of experience in construction equipment management or a related field, with at least five years of experience in a supervisory or senior leadership capacity within the construction industry. Experience in the heavy construction equipment industry is highly preferred. Salary range $140,000 to $145,000 annually.Benefits include:
