Job Description

You're the technical one. But you've spent years quoting and supporting other people's accounts, and nobody's ever handed you the keys. We're offering you the keys.
WHO WE ARE HJ
Kirby is a third-generation, 60-year-old industrial company near Cleveland — on a mission to make American OEMs better at what they build. We design custom pressure gauges and supply the fittings, tubing, valves, and air-prep that make our customers' equipment work: pressure, flow, pneumatic, hydraulic. We're small. We move fast and we're using AI aggressively to punch above our weight. And we genuinely enjoy the work. We're looking for one sharp, mechanically-minded technical person to help us build what's next.
THE ONE THING YOU MUST BRING
Real mechanical and technical understanding. You need to genuinely get how physical systems and components work — how a valve, a gauge, a regulator, or a pneumatic/hydraulic circuit actually functions. You can read a drawing and a datasheet. We can teach you our catalog. We can't teach you how to think mechanically. If that's your strength, keep reading — this was written for you.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
Become the trusted technical go-to for our key accounts — the person customers call when they need to solve a pressure, flow, pneumatic, or hydraulic problem. Own the quoting, pricing, and margins for your book of accounts. Grow those accounts the right way — by being excellent to work with, not by being pushy. Build AI-powered workflows alongside the owner to make all of it faster and smarter. Over time, run these relationships end-to-end — with a real path to lead sales as we grow.
THIS IS FOR YOU IF
… You're mechanically curious and you love figuring out how things work. You're the detail person who catches the error before the customer does. You can say "I don't know — but I'll find out," and mean it. You understand (or can learn fast) pneumatic and hydraulic systems, valves, gauges, regulators, fittings, tubing, and instrumentation. You can talk to engineers and maintenance managers without blinking. You've been doing great work in inside sales, applications, technical support, field service, or quoting — and you're ready for the ownership nobody's given you yet.
WHAT WE'RE NOT LOOKING FOR
(we mean this) Road warriors. This isn't a suitcase job. Commission chasers who need a giant quota plan to get out of bed. Slick salespeople with no mechanical substance — polish doesn't help if you can't talk shop with an engineer. Pure engineers who'd honestly rather not talk to a customer. If that's you — no hard feelings. This just isn't your seat.
WHAT YOU'LL GET
Real ownership of real accounts. Your fingerprints on the whole business. A solid base of $65,000-$85,000 (depending on experience) plus uncapped upside tied to doing the job well — not to squeezing customers. Autonomy to work how and where you work best, once you're ramped. A front-row seat to — and a hand in building — how the company puts AI to work.. The owner in your corner, not on your back.
BACKGROUNDS THAT TEND TO FIT
Inside sales, technical sales, applications engineering, sales support, field service, or customer-service/quoting roles at a distributor or manufacturer in fluid power, pneumatics, hydraulics, instrumentation, or industrial components — the kind of place that sells valves, fittings, tubing, gauges, or transducers. A hands-on mechanical background (field service, maintenance, technical school, or just building and fixing things) is a real plus. Fluid-power certifications (CFPS, CFPPS, and the like) are a bonus, never a requirement. If you've got the mechanical instinct and the curiosity, we'll teach you our catalog.
