Job Description

Book Burro Wrangler Overview:
The Book Burro is a vintage airstream trailer converted into a bookmobile. Pulled by a truck, this 25-foot trailer travels to communities within a two hour drive of Durango to distribute free new books and host pop-up events and programs. The Book Burro Wrangler plays a vital role in bringing Maria's Literary Foundation's mission to life through thoughtful planning, execution, and stewardship of our bookmobile program, the Book Burro. This role is responsible for helping to shape the Book Burro program, ensure smooth operations, and coordinate with community partners around the Four Corners region to plan and host weekly Book Burro events. The Book Burro Wrangler leads this new program with the goal of expanding access to books and bringing people together through great literary programming across the Southwest. They work closely with the Executive Director and Deputy Director of Maria's Literary Foundation, as well as the staff at Maria's Bookshop. The Wrangler is the face of the Book Burro program, building strong community partnerships and representing Maria's Literary Foundation to stakeholders and the public. This is a one-year position , with the intention of extension based on funding availability. The ideal candidate is passionate about books, youth engagement, and community-building, with strong organizational and interpersonal skills. This is a full-time, in-person position based in Durango, CO.

$25/hour
Schedule:
Mix of in-person (while operating the bookmobile) and remote, some evenings/weekends for events
Responsibilities:
Program Planning and Community Outreach
  • Work with existing community partners and conduct outreach to new partners about Book Burro offerings
  • Establish a regular schedule of Book Burro programs including school visits, nonprofit partnerships, special events, and neighborhood stops Collaborate with the Executive Director on new program ideas and community partnerships Event Management
  • Plan and execute all Book Burro events including scheduling, book and supply purchasing, transportation, event staffing, documentation, post-event cleanup and evaluation
  • Ensure the Book Burro is inclusive and welcoming to all community members Support special projects and initiatives aligned with the Foundation's mission Volunteer Coordination
  • Recruit, onboard, and oversee all Book Burro volunteers Provide support and guidance to volunteers to ensure a positive experience for both volunteers and patrons Maintain volunteer records and help foster a sense of community among the team Airstream Maintenance and Inventory Management
  • Maintain a clean and inviting space inside the Book Burro
  • Work with the Executive Director to coordinate any necessary repairs or construction inside the Airstream.
Restock books and office supplies to keep the Book Burro well-stocked and ready for events.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or 4 years of experience working in nonprofits, youth services, libraries, education, or a related field Experience hauling a large trailer A passion for books, literacy, and community service Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities Self-starter who can work independently and collaboratively Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Comfortable working with youth and families in a public-facing role
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience event or program planning Spanish language proficiency
