Job Description

The Brookings Regional Humane Society (BRHS) is seeking a dynamic, outgoing and self-motivated individual to join our team as The Development & Marketing Director (D&M Director). BRHS, located in Brookings, SD, shelters, comforts, and cares for stray, abandoned and surrendered pets. Our mission is to improve the lives of companion animals and support those who care for them. The D&M Director will immediately be responsible for spearheading our capital campaign fundraising efforts for a new facility over the next five years. The ideal candidate will have at least two years of development experience and have demonstrated ability to secure lead and major gifts. A passion for animal welfare and a commitment to advancing the mission of BRHS are essential. Previous capital campaign experience is a plus. The D&M Director will be expected to devote at least 70% of their time to Capital Campaign, Development and Fundraising activities and approximately 30% to Marketing activities. The D&M Director will work remotely, have a flexible work schedule, and must be willing to occasionally work evenings and weekends. The Development & Marketing Director advances the mission of BRHS by leading development, fundraising, marketing, communications, and donor engagement efforts. Working closely with the Executive Director (ED), this position develops and implements strategic initiatives that support the long-term sustainability, growth, and visibility of BRHS and position the organization for success. The Development & Marketing Director leads all fundraising initiatives for BRHS to meet revenue goals from individual donors, corporations, foundations, and government agencies, strengthens relationships with corporate sponsors and foundation partners, and expands funding opportunities that support the mission and strategic goals of BRHS. They are responsible for donor identification, cultivation and stewardship, leading capital campaign efforts, and coordinating and evaluating fundraising events. The Development & Marketing Director also serves as a key liaison between BRHS, donors, businesses, media outlets, community organizations, and the general public. Through strategic communications and community engagement, this position increases awareness of the mission, programs, and impact of BRHS while building strong community support for the organization. Responsibilities Collaborate with the ED to create and implement the organization's Development Plan, utilizing strategies such as major donors, planned giving, grants, corporate and individual appeals, social media, and special events. Identify and research prospective new donors while stewarding relationships with existing donors by means of regular donor communications, impact updates, and newsletters. Lead the design and implementation of capital campaigns for BRHS. Maintain accurate gift-tracking and donor information in the donor database, generate acknowledgments and thank-you letters, and design and run required reports for the ED and/or Board of Directors (BOD).

37 PM Partner with the ED to identify, research, and pursue grant funding opportunities, including proposal development and submission. Coordinate fundraising committee activities, serve as the primary point of contact for fundraising events, and assist with event planning and execution. Facilitate fundraising efforts by providing effective communication between fundraising volunteers, staff, and members of the BOD. Collaborate with the ED to create and implement the organization's Marketing Plan including newsletters, direct mail and email, paid advertising, social media, and communication with local media outlets. Partner with the ED to cultivate and maintain relationships with local businesses, media outlets, and community organizations to maximize visibility, community engagement, and mission impact of BRHS. Assist the ED with speaking engagements and attend networking events to facilitate partnerships with community businesses and organizations. Develop and oversee distribution of promotional materials for fundraising events and organizational initiatives following branding guidelines. Track and report fundraising event revenues and expenses ensuring accurate financial records and timely reporting to the ED and/or BOD. Manage and maintain marketing, fundraising, sponsorship, and event-related website and social media content, and coordinate with other authorized staff responsible for operational and animal-related updates. Serve as the secondary contact for crisis response and public relations. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor's or associate degree in nonprofit management, business administration, marketing, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two or more years of experience in development, fundraising, sales, client relations, communications, marketing, or a related field are strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to cultivate, steward, and maintain meaningful connections with others.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently or collaboratively, take initiative, and effectively solve problems.
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, time management, and organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with email, website maintenance, Canva, Microsoft Word and Excel, donor management software, and multiple social media platforms.
  • Passion for animal welfare and commitment to advancing BRHS's mission.
  • Ability to keep highly sensitive personal and financial information confidential.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and the ability to work with others in a caring, honest, responsible, and respectful manner.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekend
Pay:
$45,000.00 - $55,000.00 per year
