The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is a growing local science museum with interactive, hands-on exhibits for science lovers of all ages. We are Western North Carolina's home for experiential science learning, discovery, and exploration. Young learners ages 3-12 especially enjoy our exhibits and programs that strive to spark the imagination, fuel a passion for discovery and experimentation, and foster lifelong curiosity. AMOS is an active, bustling workplace with a moderate-to-loud noise level, where flexibility, energy, and collaboration are essential. Team members must be comfortable engaging with children and families, standing for extended periods, and working in a fast-paced, guest-centered environment. Employees may be required to lift and/or move up to 40 lbs, bend, reach, and maintain a professional and positive presence on the museum floor. Position Summary The Visitor Services Coordinator- Weekend Lead plays a vital role in ensuring that every visitor to AMOS has a welcoming, engaging, and safe experience. This is a forward-facing, guest-centered role that combines admissions, membership, shop operations, and volunteer coordination with leadership responsibilities on weekends, when the Lead serves as the acting manager on duty.
Core Functions Weekend Leadership:
Serve as the museum's manager on duty during most weekends, responsible for front-line operations, staff oversight, guest relations, and safety procedures.
Admissions & Membership:
Provide admissions desk support, process daily ticketing and membership sales, promote membership benefits, and ensure accurate financial handling.
Shop Leadership:
Support retail operations including inventory tracking, vendor ordering, merchandise display creation, and shop reporting.
Volunteer & Intern Coordination:
Manage the museum's intern and volunteer program, including recruitment, placement, supervision, mentorship, and program tracking.
Guest Engagement & Programming:
Facilitate guest experiences such as STEAM activities, birthday parties, and museum events. Provide enthusiastic, positive interactions that enhance the visitor experience.
Exhibit & Facility Monitoring:
Conduct exhibit checks, address or report issues, support cleaning/sanitization, and ensure public spaces remain safe, functional, and welcoming.
Team Culture:
Actively contribute to a collaborative, supportive team environment by modeling professionalism, adaptability, and a guest-first approach. Key Responsibilities Guest Experience & Admissions Greet and orient guests, ensuring a positive first impression. Operate the museum's point-of-sale system for tickets, memberships, and retail. Accurately perform financial SOPs and cash handling procedures. Inform guests of special programs, learning opportunities, and events. Gather and communicate guest feedback to management. Membership & Retail Shop Process and promote membership sales, encouraging long-term engagement. Track, order, and manage merchandise inventory. Submit orders to vendors and maintain accurate reports and payment schedules. Create and refresh merchandise displays to improve sales. Volunteer & Intern Coordination Recruit, place, and support interns and volunteers. Provide ongoing supervision, mentorship, and clear communication. Coordinate with staff to ensure meaningful experiences and program effectiveness. Weekend Manager on Duty Lead all front-line operations on weekends, ensuring smooth daily function. Provide leadership for staff, volunteers, and interns. Serve as the point of contact for safety issues, escalated guest concerns, and staff questions. Programming & Guest Engagement Facilitate STEAM activities, birthday parties, and special programs. Display high energy and enthusiasm in guest interactions. Support calls, supply orders, and other operational tasks. Assist with grant-related reporting and recordkeeping. Exhibit & Facility Oversight Perform exhibit checks and daily housekeeping routines. Collaborate with Exhibits and Facilities teams to ensure spaces are safe and functional. Support emergency response procedures as needed. Team & Professionalism Maintain a collaborative, positive, and professional approach. Assist colleagues as needed and contribute to cross-team support. Welcome and work effectively with diverse guests and team members. Model timeliness, adaptability, and responsibility for completing tasks.
Qualifications Education:
A degree is not required. Equivalent experience in customer service, hospitality, museums, or nonprofit visitor services will be considered.
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years in guest-facing or visitor experience roles; leadership or coordination experience strongly preferred.
Skills:
Strong interpersonal and communication abilities. Ability to lead teams of staff, volunteers, and interns. Comfort with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and POS systems. Ability to accurately handle cash, follow financial procedures and create basic financial reports.
Schedule:
