Expected Total Compensation:
$55,000-$65,000 annually, including hourly compensation and participation in PBMA's employee commission program About the Position Palm Beach Modern Auctions is seeking a Design Specialist & Auction Administration associate to join our team. This position combines entry-to-intermediate-level work in 20th-century and contemporary design with auction administration, online listing creation/editing, and other technology-assisted tasks. You do not need to arrive knowing every aspect of the auction business. Much of the position can be taught. We are more interested in finding someone who is intelligent, organized, curious, dependable, comfortable learning new systems, interested in design, and willing to take responsibility for their work. PBMA is an established specialty auction house serving clients nationally and internationally. Because we operate with a lean team, every associate has a meaningful role in preparing auctions, supporting other departments, and serving clients. Primary Responsibilities Design The associate will support PBMA's Design category, including: Researching 20th-century and contemporary furniture, lighting, objects, and decorative arts Assisting with basic catalog descriptions Researching makers, designers, manufacturers, comparable auction results, and market information Assisting with estimates under the direction of PBMA leadership Reviewing incoming Design property Communicating with clients regarding routine Design-related matters Helping organize property as it moves through photography, cataloging, marketing, auction, and post-sale processes Developing greater category knowledge over time Although auction-house experience is not required, someone with a background or strong interest in design, decorative arts, art history, galleries, interiors, antiques, museums, auction houses, or related fields may be particularly well suited. Auction Administration & Online Listings A substantial part of the position will involve PBMA's auction-management systems and administrative workflow, including: Entering and maintaining information in Vault, PBMA's auction-management platform Preparing and processing consignment information Assisting with property schedules and contracts Maintaining accurate lot and client records Supporting auction build and catalog organization Helping coordinate property intake Assisting with administrative follow-through before and after auctions Learning PBMA's internal systems, procedures, and technology tools Helping ensure that information moves accurately between departments Accuracy matters. Auction houses handle other people's property, information, and money, and good records are essential. Administrative & Client Support The associate will also provide administrative coverage across the office as needed. This includes helping with phones, visitors, routine client questions, auction-related administration, and Concierge coverage when necessary. This cross-coverage is important because it allows PBMA's Luxury Specialist & Concierge Services Liaison to devote additional time to Luxury category development when auction activity requires it. PBMA is intentionally collaborative. Associates have defined primary responsibilities, but successful team members understand that an auction is a shared effort. What We Are Looking For We are looking for someone who is: Dependable and punctual Organized and detail-oriented Comfortable working with technology and learning new software Curious and willing to research Interested in design and the auction marketplace Professional with clients Comfortable communicating by telephone and email Able to move between detailed administrative work and client-facing responsibilities Capable of working independently after training Willing to ask questions when unsure Flexible when auction priorities change Comfortable working as part of a small team Interested in learning and assuming greater responsibility over time A college degree may be helpful but is not necessarily more important than intelligence, judgment, work ethic, curiosity, and relevant experience. Our Work Environment PBMA is an entrepreneurial, deadline-driven business. Our regular office schedule is Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. , and this is an in-person, full-time hourly position . PBMA generally conducts three major auction events each year . These sales are held on weekends and may be one- or two-day auctions, typically Saturday and Sunday. Attendance and participation during scheduled major auction weekends are required as part of the position. PBMA also hosts cocktail previews on the Thursday evening before major auction weekends and may hold several additional client or category events during the season. Participation in these events is part of the position when scheduled. Because this is a full-time hourly position , all required auction, preview, and event hours are paid. These periods may result in overtime compensation in accordance with applicable law. We work hard to provide associates with meaningful time away from work. In return, when associates are scheduled to work, we expect them to be present, punctual, engaged, and focused. Auction season can be particularly busy. Reliability during those periods is important because every department depends on the others to meet catalog, marketing, preview, auction, payment, and client deadlines. Personal phones and other distractions should not interfere with work responsibilities during scheduled hours. PBMA understands that employees have lives, families, interests, and responsibilities outside the office. We try to work with people when legitimate circumstances arise. At the same time, we are a business with commitments to clients and one another, and associates are expected to manage their schedules and paid time off responsibly. How PBMA Works PBMA has grown by combining clear systems with flexibility. We do not maintain layers of unnecessary management. Associates are expected to understand their responsibilities, communicate with one another, identify problems, and help move the auction forward. Business development is part of our culture rather than the responsibility of one salesperson. Every interaction with a buyer, consignor, visitor, designer, dealer, advisor, or referral source can become a future relationship.
We believe:
Better relationships create better business. We use technology, data, and AI to reduce repetitive work so our associates can spend more time learning about property, serving clients, solving problems, and building relationships. Compensation This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position that also participates in PBMA's employee commission program. Based on the responsibilities of the position and PBMA's current auction activity, we anticipate total annual compensation of approximately $55,000-$65,000 , combining regular hourly compensation and commission. Commission is tied to company auction performance, so actual compensation may vary and has the potential to exceed this range when auction results are particularly strong. Because commission-based compensation may be unfamiliar to someone entering the auction industry, PBMA may establish a first-year compensation guarantee while the associate learns the position, our auction cycle, and how the commission program works. Required auction, preview, and event hours are paid, including applicable overtime. Specific hourly rate, commission participation, first-year guarantee, benefits, paid time off, and other employment terms will be discussed during the interview process.
How to Apply Please submit:
1. Your resume 2. A brief statement of interest explaining why this particular position and Palm Beach Modern Auctions interest you We are not looking for a lengthy cover letter. A few thoughtful paragraphs are sufficient. Applications that do not include both items may not be considered. We ask for the statement of interest for a simple reason: we want applicants who have taken the time to understand the position and believe it may genuinely be a good fit.
