Our Lead Technicians play a critical role in making that happen. They are highly skilled technicians, problem solvers, teachers, and leaders who help the entire team become better. This is not a desk job. Our Lead Technician will continue to produce work and turn billed hours while also helping lead the technical production of the shop. Position Purpose The Lead Technician is responsible for helping the General Manager create an efficient, productive, and high-quality shop environment. This person serves as the technical leader of the shop by: Performing advanced diagnostics and repairs at a mastery level Producing their own billed hours and maintaining strong personal productivity Helping assign and coordinate work based on technician skill level and shop priorities Coaching and developing younger and less experienced technicians Helping technicians work through difficult diagnostics and repairs Maintaining a high standard of quality, safety, and workmanship Helping create a team culture built around excellence, integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement The Lead Technician should be the person other technicians naturally turn to when they are stuck. Primary Responsibilities 1. Lead Technical Production Perform complex mechanical, diagnostic, and electrical repairs with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency. Maintain strong personal productivity and consistently turn billed hours. Perform thorough vehicle inspections and accurately identify needed maintenance and repairs. Diagnose difficult and intermittent concerns using a systematic diagnostic process rather than replacing parts based on guesswork. Utilize diagnostic equipment, service information, wiring diagrams, testing procedures, and other available resources to accurately identify the root cause of vehicle concerns. Complete repairs according to company procedures and manufacturer specifications. Take ownership of difficult repairs from diagnosis through completion. Serve as the technical resource for the shop when a repair or diagnostic concern exceeds another technician's current skill level. 2. Help Lead the Flow of Production Partner with the General Manager to effectively distribute sold work based on technician skill, ability, workload, and shop priorities. Help maximize the shop's completed billed hours while maintaining quality and customer service standards. Identify production bottlenecks and help the team overcome them. Answer technician questions and help remove obstacles preventing repairs from being completed efficiently. Communicate proactively with the General Manager regarding difficult repairs, delays, parts concerns, technician needs, and other production issues. Help ensure vehicles move through the shop efficiently without sacrificing quality. 3. Develop and Train Technicians Actively mentor and coach technicians, particularly newer and developing technicians. Teach technicians how to approach diagnostics, testing, repair procedures, and difficult problems. Help technicians develop the skills necessary to become more independent and efficient. Demonstrate proper diagnostic and repair procedures rather than simply providing answers. Encourage technicians to think through problems and develop their own diagnostic abilities. Provide constructive feedback when work does not meet company standards. Help identify areas where technicians need additional training or development. Lead by example in workmanship, attitude, professionalism, communication, and accountability. 4. Maintain Our Standard of Quality Perform quality control inspections as assigned. Review completed repairs when appropriate to ensure work has been performed correctly and completely. Help identify and prevent comebacks through thorough diagnosis, inspection, and repair. Take personal ownership of the quality of work leaving the shop. Follow all company procedures related to inspections, documentation, testing, and quality control. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. 5. Partner With the Front Office Work closely with the General Manager and advisors to provide accurate technical information regarding vehicle repairs. Assist with diagnosing and explaining difficult vehicle concerns when needed. When appropriate, communicate directly with customers to explain vehicle conditions, diagnostic findings, and recommended repairs in a professional and understandable manner. Support the front office in delivering on company sales goals through accurate inspections and honest recommendations. Never recommend unnecessary work or compromise the customer's trust for the sake of a sale. Secondary Responsibilities Assist with quality control and final vehicle checks. Assist with shop cleanliness, organization, and safety. Help maintain tools and equipment in good working condition. Assist other technicians when needed while maintaining responsibility for personal production. Participate in training and continuing education. Assist with onboarding and developing new technicians. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned based on the needs of the business. What We Are Looking For We are looking for someone who is more than an experienced technician. Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required Minimum of 3 years of practical experience as an automotive technician in a professional repair facility. Demonstrated mastery-level diagnostic and electrical skills. Strong knowledge of passenger vehicle systems and their operation. Advanced ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, drivability, and intermittent vehicle concerns. Ability to use a systematic diagnostic process, including diagnostic trees, testing procedures, wiring diagrams, scan tools, and other diagnostic resources. Ability to accurately determine the root cause of a customer's concern and identify the appropriate repair. Demonstrated ability to perform complex mechanical repairs and services. Demonstrated ability to perform thorough vehicle inspections and identify maintenance and repair needs based on vehicle condition and mileage. Ability and willingness to train, mentor, and coach less experienced technicians. Demonstrated ability to lead by example and positively influence other team members. Ability to effectively use computers, diagnostic equipment, repair information systems, and Customer Management Software. Strong verbal and written communication skills in English. Valid U.S. driver's license and ability to be insured under the company's insurance policy. Ability to drive vehicles, including vehicles with passengers. Ability to lift more than 50 pounds without assistance. Ability to stand, bend, stoop, reach overhead, push, pull, and perform other physical movements necessary to complete automotive repairs and inspections. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and counting. Preferred ASE certifications. Manufacturer or advanced diagnostic training. Experience working as a Lead Technician, Master Technician, Foreman, or similar technical leadership role. Experience training or mentoring developing technicians. Experience diagnosing advanced electrical, network, drivability, and intermittent concerns. Physical Requirements This position requires the ability to perform the physical activities necessary to inspect, diagnose, service, repair, and maintain passenger vehicles.
