About the Role Tier 1 Budtenders are the frontline of the Southern Waves customer experience. This is an entry-level cannabis retail position with a strong focus on sales, customer engagement, product knowledge, and operational accuracy. We are especially interested in candidates with a proven sales background who know how to speak with customers, understand what they are looking for, recommend products confidently, and help turn a good interaction into a completed sale. You'll greet customers, learn our product selection, make thoughtful recommendations, explain available promotions, process transactions, maintain the sales floor, and work closely with the rest of the team to keep the dispensary moving efficiently. You do not need to be a cannabis expert on Day 1. Product knowledge can be taught. Strong communication, sales instincts, reliability, professionalism, and a willingness to learn are much harder to teach. Sales & Customer Experience Engage customers in a friendly, confident, and professional manner Ask effective questions to understand each customer's needs, preferences, budget, and experience level Recommend products based on the customer's goals and the products currently available Clearly communicate promotions, discounts, loyalty benefits, and product options Develop strong working knowledge of our brands, product categories, cannabinoids, terpenes, strains, and menu Provide accurate and compliant product information without making prohibited medical claims Create a comfortable experience for both new and experienced cannabis consumers Help customers make informed purchasing decisions without creating a high-pressure sales environment Maintain awareness of sales opportunities while keeping the customer's experience first Provide efficient service and help keep lines moving during high-volume periods Transaction Processing Accurately process customer transactions through the POS system Verify valid government-issued identification as required Follow all company cash-handling procedures Accurately apply discounts, promotions, loyalty rewards, and payment methods Ensure products, labels, packaging, and customer handoffs meet company and Maryland regulatory requirements Maintain accuracy and attention to detail while working at a fast pace Compliance & Safety Follow all applicable Maryland cannabis regulations, COMAR requirements, and Southern Waves SOPs Handle cannabis products securely and responsibly Follow required ID verification, product-control, and inventory procedures Respect controlled-access areas and security protocols Immediately communicate compliance, safety, inventory, or transaction concerns to management Store Operations Restock shelves and maintain product displays Assist with product counts and inventory-related tasks Keep registers, counters, workstations, and customer areas clean and organized Participate in opening and closing responsibilities Assist with drive-thru, pickup, reception, fulfillment, or other store functions as needed Support teammates and management wherever needed to maintain smooth store operations What We're Looking ForRequired Qualifications Must be 21 years of age or older High school diploma or equivalent Ability to satisfy background-screening and employment requirements applicable to Maryland cannabis employees Strong communication and interpersonal skills Comfortable speaking with customers and recommending products Professional, dependable, and punctual Able to learn new products, systems, promotions, and procedures quickly Able to remain organized, accurate, and composed during busy periods Able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs Available to work a flexible retail schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed Preferred Qualifications We strongly prefer candidates with previous sales experience , particularly those who have worked in environments where they were expected to actively engage customers, recommend products or services, meet sales goals, increase basket size, or close transactions.

Additional preferred experience includes:

Commission-based, goal-oriented, or consultative sales experience Retail sales experience Wireless, electronics, automotive, fitness, beauty, hospitality, or other customer-facing sales environments High-volume retail or customer-service experience Previous cannabis retail experience Cash-handling and POS experience Familiarity with cannabis product types, cannabinoids, terpenes, and strains If you have a strong sales background, enjoy working with people, and want to build your knowledge of Maryland's cannabis industry, we encourage you to apply.
