JOB DESCRIPTION
The School Nutrition Team Member assists in providing nutritious, high-quality meals to students and staff in a safe, sanitary, and efficient manner. Under the direction of the Director of School Nutrition and school cafeteria management, this position performs a variety of food preparation, serving, cashiering, cleaning, and kitchen support duties while maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local food service regulations. The position exercises no supervisory responsibilities.
REQUISITE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the eighth grade. General knowledge of food preparation methods and large-scale food service operations. General knowledge of the use, care, and safe operation of commercial kitchen equipment. General knowledge of food safety, sanitation, nutrition, and USDA regulations governing school nutrition programs. Ability to operate standard kitchen utensils and food service equipment. Ability to work cooperatively with students, staff, parents, and the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to remain standing for extended periods and work in warm kitchen environments. Demonstrated patience, professionalism, and a positive attitude when working with children.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are representative of the work performed and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Prepare, portion, and serve a variety of menu items including fruits, vegetables, salads, soups, desserts, breads, and entrees in accordance with established recipes and menus. Assist with food preparation assignments and rotate through various food service stations as needed. Operate commercial kitchen equipment including mixers, slicers, choppers, steamers, ovens, dishwashers, and other food preparation equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Maintain clean and sanitary food preparation, serving, dining, storage, and kitchen areas in accordance with health department and USDA standards. Wash dishes, pots, pans, kettles, trays, utensils, and other kitchen equipment. Sweep, mop, sanitize, and perform routine custodial duties within the cafeteria and kitchen. Receive, inspect, stock, and properly store food and supplies while maintaining inventory rotation and food safety standards. Assist with estimating, ordering, and maintaining adequate food and supply inventories. Operate the point-of-sale system and serve as cashier when assigned, accurately collecting payments and maintaining required records. Follow all food safety, sanitation, workplace safety, and district operating procedures. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of the position. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of School Nutrition or designee.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position operates primarily in a commercial school kitchen and cafeteria environment. Employees are regularly exposed to hot ovens, steam, refrigeration units, cleaning chemicals, wet floors, and varying temperatures. Noise levels typically range from moderate to high during meal preparation and service. The position requires frequent standing and walking throughout the workday, as well as bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive hand motions. Employees must be able to safely operate commercial kitchen equipment and regularly lift, carry, and move food products, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Employees must possess sufficient visual acuity, hearing, manual dexterity, and communication skills to safely prepare and serve food, operate equipment, interact with students and staff, and respond appropriately to changing kitchen and cafeteria conditions.
