Job Description

The Flying Pig Bookstore in Shelburne seeks an avid reader with excellent customer service skills who is interested in exploring a bookselling career on our team. We seek individuals who are friendly, collaborative, pay attention to detail, thrive in fast-paced retail environments, are proficient in current technologies, possess a strong work ethic, demonstrate self-motivation and initiative, and have a deep passion for social justice and diversity. Competitive wages will be offered commensurate with skills and experience, for a schedule of 20-32 hours per week, including one weekend shift. This role has potential for advancement into a full-time position.
Responsibilities:
Assist customers of all ages with a friendly and helpful manner. Provide accurate information about books, including title, author, publisher, price, and availability. Recommend books and other merchandise based on customers' interests and preferences. Help customers locate books on shelves and recommend alternate titles if needed. Handle customer inquiries and concerns in a professional and courteous manner. Process sales transactions accurately and efficiently using the bookstore's point-of-sale (POS) system. Assist with receiving and shelving new merchandise. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the bookstore, including shelves, displays, and work areas. Monitor and replenish book inventory on the sales floor. Alert customers to upcoming store events and promotions. Understand and support the importance of independent small businesses.
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent. Previous retail or customer service experience preferred. Passion for books and knowledge of different genres and authors. Ability to alphabetize. Strong writing skills - especially when writing staff picks for your favorite books. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work well in a team environment. Attention to detail and accuracy in handling transactions. Interest in staying current with new releases and books across age ranges. Comfort with technology (proficiency in using POS systems and cash registers)​. Social media skills for promotion of books, events, and the bookstore​. Strong organizational and time management skills​. Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time. Ability to lift and carry boxes of books and other merchandise (up to ​30 lbs).
