Southern Steer Butcher in Surprise is looking for a personable, dependable operator who delivers exceptional customer service, takes ownership and knows how to keep a team and a business running well. We are a specialty butcher retailer offering marinated meats, premium steaks, house-made sausages, burgers and other products that make great meals easier. You do not need to be an experienced butcher to succeed here. We can teach product and meat knowledge. You bring hospitality, sound judgment, accountability and management discipline. This is a hands-on Assistant Store Manager position with the opportunity to develop into a General Manager role based on performance and business needs. What you'll do Welcome customers, understand their needs and confidently recommend products, meal ideas and complementary items. Work alongside the team on the sales floor, helping maintain friendly, efficient service. Execute opening and closing procedures and keep the store clean, organized and ready for business. Support scheduling, shift coverage and labor management. Coach employees, set clear expectations and address performance issues professionally. Check deliveries for accuracy, condition and freshness; reconcile invoices and document discrepancies. Maintain accurate inventory, monitor waste and shrink, and communicate replenishment needs. Handle cash controls, deposits, daily reporting and assigned administrative responsibilities. Follow food safety procedures and maintain consistent merchandising and product standards. Follow through on assigned priorities and communicate problems early, with proposed solutions. Coordinate purchasing needs with the owner and follow established approval procedures. What we're looking for Experience leading people in retail, grocery, specialty food, restaurants, hospitality or another customer-facing business. A warm, engaging customer presence and a genuine service mindset. Evidence of taking responsibility, solving problems and following through. Sound professional judgment and appropriate workplace boundaries. Experience with scheduling, labor, inventory, receiving, invoices, cash handling or operating reports. Ability to coach employees and hold them accountable respectfully and consistently. Attention to detail and an understanding of how labor, waste and inventory affect profitability. Dependability and interest in building a long-term operating career. Availability for a full-time schedule that includes evenings, weekends and holidays. Food Safety Manager certification required before hire. Applicants who do not currently hold certification must obtain it before starting. Butcher, meat-cutting and culinary experience are welcome, but customer service and management ability carry more weight. Experience managing operating budgets or P&L results is a plus.
