The Trade Manager is the driving force behind the department, uniting a team of skilled tradespeople into one high-performing unit. This is a hands-on, deck plate leadership role: the Trade Manager sets the daily direction for Trade Leads and their teams, stays engaged before, during, and after every job, and partners closely with the broader Service Team to build schedules that keep work moving. What you'll be doing:
  • Lead and coordinate the pipe welding, plumbing, and valve service sections as a single, cohesive department.
  • Responsible for daily work scheduling, budget management, and manpower and resource allocation across the department.
  • Liaise with Project Managers, Customers, and Vessel Management Representatives to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Assist with the inspection, estimation, and development of scope for new work proposals.
  • Work with the Project Management team to develop schedules, costing, and milestone definitions for jobs and tasks across the department. Evaluate manpower forecasts to ensure resource availability.
  • Guide Team Leaders in managing jobs and tasks in accordance with defined quality, cost, delivery, and safety specifications.
  • Manage the In Process Quality Assurance (IPQA) program for the shop, to ensure all tasks are completed to the highest industry and classification society standards.
  • Manage personnel certification records and required continued training for qualification with various Marine Classification Societies (Lloyd's Register, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, RINA, etc.), as well as assisting in the development and implementation of training systems.
  • Ensure the department's work complies with OSHA and other applicable safety regulations, as well as marine classification standards.
What you need to bring:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 10+ years of supervisory experience in a skilled trade, preferably pipe welding/fitting, plumbing, valve service, shipboard systems/engineering, or similar.
  • Demonstrated business acumen and experience managing budgets, expenses, and cost controls for a shop, department, or business unit.
  • General knowledge of the skills respective to each trade within the department.
  • General technical knowledge of shipboard piping and plumbing parts and materials (PVC, copper, PEX, CuNi, stainless steel, Carbon Steel, etc.), valve types (ball, gate, globe, butterfly, safety relief, etc.), and pipe welding practices.
  • Working knowledge of standard shipboard systems including but not limited to Sea Water, Fresh Water, Fuel Oil, Lube Oil, Black/Grey Water, Refrigeration/Chilled Water, etc.
  • Familiarity with Marine Classification Society requirements (Lloyd's Register, American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, RINA, etc.) and the certification/training standards they impose on personnel, equipment, and systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Skills and experience working with Quality Assurance programs.
  • ABYC and/or manufacturer certifications preferred.
