Job Description

Assistant Store Manager — Rock'n 50's Cafe Bismarck, ND | Full-Time | $44,000-$46,000/year + Tips | 45+ Hours/Week Rock'n 50's Cafe is looking for an experienced, motivated Assistant Store Manager to join our leadership team. This is a hands-on, working management position for someone who understands that great restaurant leadership happens on the floor and in the kitchen—not from the sidelines. The Assistant Store Manager will work very closely with our General Manager to help oversee the day-to-day operation of the entire restaurant, including both Front of House (FOH) and Back of House (BOH) operations. Previous cooking and restaurant experience is required . This position will regularly be scheduled to work cook/BOH shifts as well as serving/FOH shifts, in addition to Manager-on-Duty responsibilities. We are looking for someone who can confidently step onto the line during a busy rush, provide excellent service to a table, support employees throughout the restaurant, and help lead the operation as a whole. This is not an office-based management position and is not strictly a FOH or BOH role. Our ideal candidate is a versatile restaurant professional who is comfortable working wherever they are needed and leading employees by example. What You'll Do As Assistant Store Manager, you will work alongside the General Manager to help ensure Rock'n 50's operates efficiently, consistently, and successfully across all areas of the restaurant. You will be expected to understand and actively participate in both FOH and BOH operations.
Responsibilities include:
Work closely with the General Managerin overseeing the day-to-day operations of the restaurant. Regularly work scheduled cook/BOH shifts, including working the line, preparing menu items, maintaining ticket times, completing prep, and supporting the kitchen during high-volume periods. Regularly work scheduled serving/FOH shifts, providing excellent customer service while maintaining Rock'n 50's service standards. Serve as Manager on Duty and oversee restaurant operations when assigned or when the General Manager is unavailable. Be prepared to step into cooking, serving, hosting, expo, dish, bar, or other operational positions when necessary. Help maintain consistent food quality, portioning, presentation, recipes, and ticket times. Help ensure excellent guest service and a positive overall dining experience. Train, coach, develop, and hold employees accountable across both FOH and BOH. Assist the General Manager with identifying staffing needs, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, and employee development. Help maintain appropriate staffing and deployment based on anticipated business volume. Maintain strong standards for cleanliness, organization, sanitation, food safety, and equipment care throughout the restaurant. Assist with food inventory, ordering, receiving, product rotation, storage, prep levels, and vendor coordination. Help monitor and control food costs, waste, portioning, labor costs, and unnecessary overtime. Monitor restaurant sales and operations and help identify opportunities to improve efficiency, profitability, service, and overall performance. Maintain strong communication between FOH, BOH, Bar, Team Leads, the General Manager, and Ownership. Assist employees during busy periods and rushes rather than managing solely from a supervisory position. Handle guest concerns professionally and work to resolve issues appropriately. Help ensure employees are properly utilizing Toast, Sling, GroupMe, and other restaurant systems. Help build and maintain a positive, accountable, respectful, and team-oriented workplace culture. Support restaurant events, fundraisers, promotions, and community initiatives as needed. Partner with the General Manager and Ownership to identify operational challenges and implement solutions. Cooking Experience Is Required Because this position includes regularly scheduled cooking shifts, applicants must have previous hands-on restaurant cooking experience. The Assistant Store Manager must be comfortable stepping onto the line and performing the same essential BOH responsibilities expected of our cooks.
Candidates should have experience with:
Working a restaurant line in a fast-paced environment. Preparing and cooking food consistently according to recipes and restaurant standards. Managing multiple tickets and maintaining appropriate ticket times. Proper food handling, sanitation, temperatures, storage, and food-safety procedures. Prep work, portioning, product rotation, and maintaining appropriate prep levels. Keeping a clean, organized, and efficient workstation. Working effectively as part of a kitchen team during high-volume periods. Applicants without previous restaurant cooking experience will not be the right fit for this particular management position. Front of House Expectations This position is equally expected to support the customer-facing side of the restaurant. The Assistant Store Manager will regularly work FOH/serving shifts and should be comfortable: Serving tables and providing excellent customer service. Using the restaurant POS system and handling guest transactions. Understanding proper steps of service. Supporting hosts, servers, bartenders, and other FOH employees. Handling guest concerns and resolving issues professionally. Monitoring dining room cleanliness, organization, and service. Helping manage wait times, table flow, and overall guest experience. Leading FOH employees and maintaining service expectations. Previous serving or other FOH restaurant experience is strongly preferred. Working With the General Manager The Assistant Store Manager will serve as a key partner to the General Manager and should be prepared to work collaboratively rather than operate within only one department. Together, the General Manager and Assistant Store Manager will help oversee: Restaurant staffing and scheduling. Employee training and development. FOH and BOH performance. Food quality and customer service. Inventory and operational controls. Labor and food costs. Cleanliness and food safety. Employee accountability. Guest concerns. Restaurant systems and procedures. Events, promotions, and community involvement. Overall restaurant performance. The Assistant Store Manager should be capable of stepping into a larger leadership role when the General Manager is unavailable while maintaining strong communication with the General Manager and Ownership. Scheduling Expectations Restaurant management requires flexibility. This position will have a varied schedule based on the operational needs of the restaurant. The Assistant Store Manager must be available to: Work days, evenings, and weekends. Work some holidays based on restaurant needs and operating hours. Work scheduled cook/BOH shifts. Work scheduled serving/FOH shifts. Work Manager-on-Duty shifts. Float into other restaurant positions when necessary. Adjust their schedule when reasonably necessary to assist with staffing shortages, training, high-volume periods, events, or other operational needs. This position should not expect a consistent Monday-Friday or exclusively daytime management schedule. Who We're Looking For We're looking for someone who: Has hands-on restaurant cooking experience and is confident working the line. Has FOH, serving, or customer-service experience. Has previous restaurant leadership or management experience. Understands both FOH and BOH restaurant operations. Is comfortable being scheduled as both a cook and server, not simply supervising those positions. Leads by example and is willing to perform the same work expected of the team. Can transition between the kitchen, dining room, and management responsibilities as business needs change. Understands the importance of balancing food quality, service, speed, labor, food costs, cleanliness, and employee performance. Leads with both accountability and respect. Is dependable, organized, and comfortable making decisions. Communicates effectively with employees, management, Ownership, and customers. Can remain calm and lead effectively during high-volume periods. Enjoys coaching employees and developing a strong team. Understands that successful restaurant management requires supporting the entire restaurant—not just one department. Takes pride in providing an excellent customer experience. Wants to grow with a locally owned business and take ownership of their responsibilities.
Qualifications Required:
Previous hands-on restaurant cooking experience. Previous restaurant, hospitality, or food-service experience. Ability and willingness to regularly work both BOH cooking shifts and FOH serving shifts. Knowledge of food preparation, kitchen workflow, sanitation, and food safety. Strong customer-service and communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced restaurant environment. Ability to work a varied schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred:
3+ years of restaurant or hospitality experience. Previous experience as an Assistant Manager, Shift Manager, Kitchen Manager, FOH Manager, Lead Cook, Team Lead, or similar leadership role. Paid time off. Employee discount. Leadership and professional growth opportunities. Hands-on involvement in the continued growth and development of the restaurant.
