Beyond the Board is a locally owned board game and hobby store in Dublin, Ohio. We are looking for an Assistant Manager - Retail Sales who loves helping customers discover great games and can help our staff become better, more confident salespeople. This position has a particular emphasis on board game sales and customer service . While knowledge of trading card games is helpful, we are specifically looking for someone who can engage customers shopping for board games, understand what they are looking for, and turn that conversation into thoughtful recommendations.
What You'll Do:
Lead Board Game Sales Engage customers and determine what type of game will best meet their needs. Ask effective questions about player count, ages, experience level, play time, complexity, theme, and games customers have previously enjoyed. Recommend games across a wide variety of categories, including family, party, strategy, cooperative, two-player, children's, gateway, and hobby games. Explain games clearly and concisely without overwhelming customers with rules or hobby terminology. Present customers with several appropriate choices and help them confidently select a game. Identify opportunities for add-on and complementary sales when appropriate. Stay familiar with new releases, popular titles, and important products in our board game inventory. Develop the Sales Team A major responsibility of this position is helping other Beyond the Board employees become stronger board game salespeople.
You will:
Coach employees on how to approach and engage customers. Teach staff how to identify customer needs before recommending products. Help employees develop familiarity with important games and product categories. Demonstrate effective sales conversations on the floor. Provide constructive feedback and follow-up coaching. Help create a store culture where employees actively assist customers rather than simply directing them toward a section of the store. Support Store Operations As an Assistant Manager, you will also help with the day-to-day operation of the store, including: Opening and closing the store. Supervising employees and providing direction during shifts. Maintaining excellent customer service standards. Operating the point-of-sale system and handling customer transactions. Receiving, stocking, organizing, and merchandising products. Maintaining attractive, organized, and well-stocked sales areas. Identifying inventory and merchandising opportunities. Assisting with store promotions. Resolving customer concerns professionally. Completing other retail management responsibilities as needed. What We're Looking For The ideal candidate combines sales ability, communication skills, leadership, and enthusiasm for board games .
Strong candidates will have:
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Experience in retail sales, specialty retail, or another customer-facing sales environment. The ability to ask questions, listen to customers, and make thoughtful product recommendations. Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to explain products simply. Familiarity with modern board games and enthusiasm for learning new games. The ability to recommend games outside of their own personal favorites. The ability and willingness to coach other employees. Leadership skills and the confidence to provide employees with direction and feedback. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. A positive, welcoming approach toward both experienced gamers and customers who know very little about board games. Availability appropriate for a retail environment, including evenings and weekends. Board Game Knowledge You do not need to have played every game in the store . We are more interested in your ability to learn products and communicate with customers than encyclopedic game knowledge. You should, however, be comfortable discussing modern board games and able to learn enough about unfamiliar games to confidently recommend them. Knowledge of trading card games is a plus, but board game sales and customer engagement are the primary focus of this position. You May Be a Great Fit If... Friends regularly ask you which game they should buy. You enjoy figuring out what someone would like rather than simply recommending your own favorite games. You can explain why a game is fun without giving a 15-minute rules explanation. You enjoy talking with people who are completely new to the hobby. You notice when a customer looks lost and approach them instead of waiting for them to ask for help. You enjoy teaching coworkers and helping them improve. You understand that being knowledgeable about games and being good at selling games are different skills. You enjoy working in a locally owned retail environment where individual employees can have a meaningful impact on the business.
Experience Preferred:
Retail, sales, or customer service experience. Previous supervisory, keyholder, team lead, or management experience. Familiarity with modern board games. Specialty retail experience is helpful but previous game-store employment is not required . Candidates with strong consultative sales experience from bookstores, outdoor retail, electronics, specialty foods, or other customer-focused retail environments are encouraged to apply.
