Job Description
Produce Department Manager Bellwood Hometown Market Bellwood Hometown Market is seeking a hands-on Produce Department Manager to oversee the daily operation and financial performance of our produce department. This role is primarily responsible for ordering, inventory control, labor management, merchandising, product quality, sanitation, and shrink reduction. Primary Responsibilities Manage all daily produce department operations Order produce based on sales history, promotions, seasonal demand, inventory levels, and expected delivery schedules Receive deliveries, verify quantities and costs, inspect product quality, and resolve discrepancies Maintain proper inventory levels while minimizing out-of-stocks, over-ordering, spoilage, and shrink Monitor department sales, gross profit, margins, labor expenses, and other performance measures Conduct inventory counts and maintain accurate department records Review movement reports and adjust ordering, pricing, displays, and product selection as needed Create and maintain effective merchandising plans, including seasonal displays, promotional items, and weekly-ad products Ensure pricing, signs, scales, product labels, and country-of-origin information are accurate Inspect, rotate, trim, clean, and cull products throughout the day to maintain freshness and quality Maintain organized coolers, backroom storage areas, sales displays, and prep areas Develop employee schedules based on sales volume, delivery schedules, workload, and labor targets Assign daily tasks and hold department employees accountable for productivity and standards Train employees on ordering, stocking, rotation, merchandising, sanitation, equipment use, and safety procedures Ensure department opening and closing procedures are completed correctly Maintain food-safety, sanitation, temperature-control, and workplace-safety standards Keep required cleaning, temperature, receiving, and disposal records Coordinate with store management, vendors, distributors, and other departments Assist customers and resolve product or service concerns when necessary Perform stocking, unloading, cleaning, and other hands-on department work as required Qualifications Previous produce department, grocery retail, or fresh-food management experience preferred Working knowledge of produce ordering, receiving, rotation, storage, merchandising, and quality standards Experience managing inventory, shrink, labor, margins, and department expenses Ability to read and use sales, inventory, and financial reports Strong planning, organization, leadership, and problem-solving skills Dependable and able to work independently with limited supervision Comfortable using ordering, inventory, pricing, and point-of-sale systems Available to work early mornings, weekends, holidays, and varying shifts based on operational needs Able to stand and walk for extended periods Able to bend, reach, push, pull, and regularly lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation High school diploma or equivalent preferred Performance Expectations Success in this position will be measured through: Department sales and gross-profit performance Inventory accuracy and product availability Shrink and spoilage control Labor efficiency and schedule management Product freshness, presentation, and rotation Ordering accuracy Sanitation and food-safety compliance Completion of daily operational procedures Position Details Job type:
