Compensation:
$60,000 - $90,000 per year (commensurate with experience and education) Reports to: Shop Operations Manager Job Summary Clark Transport, LLC is seeking an experienced, customer-focused Assistant Shop Manager to join our fleet and commercial repair shop. In this role, you will work closely with the Shop Operations Manager to oversee daily business operations, with a primary focus on service writing, customer communication, and workflow coordination . The ideal candidate bridges the gap between the shop floor and our customers. We are looking for someone with a strong background in diesel mechanics who can accurately diagnose issues, talk shop with fleet managers and truck drivers, write detailed service orders, and keep shop productivity running smoothly. Key ResponsibilitiesService Writing & Customer Relations Serve as the primary point of contact for retail and commercial fleet customers dropping off equipment or calling for updates. Write clear, accurate, and comprehensive repair orders (ROs), detailing customer complaints, diagnostic findings, and approved labor/parts. Provide transparent cost estimates, secure repair authorizations, and keep customers informed throughout the repair process. Deliver exceptional customer service, building long-term trust with commercial accounts and independent operators. Shop Operations & Workflow Management Assist the Shop Operations Manager with scheduling repairs, assigning jobs to technicians based on skill level, and managing shop bay utilization. Monitor ongoing jobs to ensure repair timelines and turnaround goals are met. Coordinate parts ordering, inventory checks, and core returns with the parts department. Ensure all repair orders are accurately closed out, billed, and documented before customer pickup. Technical Oversight & Quality Control Leverage strong diesel mechanical knowledge to assist technicians with complex diagnostics and troubleshooting when needed. Perform quality control checks on completed repairs to ensure work meets safety standards and manufacturer specifications before vehicles are released. Maintain a clean, organized, and OSHA-compliant shop floor.
Qualifications & Requirements Experience:
Minimum 3-5 years of experience in diesel mechanics or heavy-duty truck repair, with proven experience in service writing, shop administration, or service management.
Technical Knowledge:
Deep understanding of commercial diesel engines (e.g., Cummins, Detroit, Caterpillar, PACCAR), air brake systems, electrical diagnostics, and heavy-duty drivetrain components.
Communication Skills:
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; able to explain complex mechanical issues clearly to non-mechanical customers.
Computer Literacy:
Proficient with shop management software, digital inspection tools, and standard office applications.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree, trade school certification, or business management coursework is a strong plus.
Work Schedule:
Ability to work Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and one Saturday per month.
