Job Description

Kings Commercial Interiors is seeking an experienced Upholstery Department Supervisor to lead our upholstery operation and help produce the high-quality custom furniture and seating our projects require. This is a hands-on leadership position , and we are specifically looking for someone who is bilingual in English and Spanish and can communicate effectively with employees across the department. We need someone who can supervise people and workflow, but who also has the technical upholstery skills to step into the work themselves. The right person should be able to read plans and shop drawings, understand how a piece is supposed to be constructed, determine fabric requirements, cut and sew accurately, manage fabric through production, and recognize whether the finished product meets a high commercial standard. If you're an experienced upholsterer who knows the craft, can communicate effectively in both English and Spanish, and is ready to take responsibility for the performance of an entire department, we'd like to talk with you. About the Work Kings Commercial Interiors produces custom architectural millwork, commercial furniture, banquettes, booths, upholstered seating, panels, and other specialty interior products. Much of our work is custom. That means the upholstery department isn't simply producing the same chair or cushion repeatedly. Projects can involve different dimensions, fabrics, patterns, shapes, construction details, finishes, and customer requirements from one job to the next. Our Upholstery Supervisor must be able to look at the information provided for a project and understand how to turn it into a finished piece that matches the design intent and meets Kings' quality standards. The Role The Upholstery Department Supervisor will oversee the day-to-day operation of the upholstery department while remaining actively involved in production. You will be responsible for helping organize the work, ensuring materials are available and accounted for, supporting and training department employees, maintaining quality, and keeping projects moving according to schedule. Strong communication in both English and Spanish is important in this role because the Supervisor will be responsible for giving direction, training employees, explaining quality expectations, and helping resolve production issues across the department. This position requires someone who understands the upholstery process from beginning to end. Hands-On Upholstery Skills The person in this position must be capable of performing and teaching the work.
Responsibilities and skills include:
Reading and interpreting architectural plans, shop drawings, details, work orders, and production information Understanding dimensions and translating drawing information into upholstery requirements Measuring and laying out fabric accurately Creating, modifying, and working from patterns and templates Cutting fabric, vinyl, leather, and other upholstery materials Understanding fabric direction, repeats, pattern matching, and alignment Sewing cushions, covers, seams, panels, welting, and other upholstered components Operating industrial sewing equipment safely and effectively Working with foam, batting, webbing, adhesives, fasteners, and related upholstery materials Fitting and applying upholstery to custom furniture and seating Producing clean corners, seams, transitions, and finished surfaces Identifying problems with fabric, patterns, foam, frames, or construction before they become finished-product issues Reworking or correcting upholstery when necessary Inspecting completed work for fit, appearance, consistency, and overall quality We are looking for someone whose work reflects a high level of craftsmanship , particularly on commercial furniture that will be closely inspected by customers, designers, architects, and General Contractors. Fabric Control and Material Tracking A major part of this position is maintaining control of customer and project-specific materials. The Upholstery Supervisor will be expected to: Verify fabric against the correct project and work order Track incoming fabric and upholstery materials Maintain accurate records of material usage and remaining yardage Identify dye lots, pattern direction, repeats, and potential defects Ensure the correct fabric is released to the correct project Plan cuts carefully to reduce unnecessary waste Label and organize cut components so they remain associated with the proper job Maintain organized fabric storage Identify shortages early enough to avoid disrupting production Communicate material needs or discrepancies to the appropriate team members On custom projects, a cutting or tracking mistake can be expensive and can delay an entire job. We need someone who understands that material control is part of quality control. Department Leadership In addition to technical upholstery work, the Supervisor will be responsible for the performance of the department.
This includes:
Assigning daily work based on project priorities Coordinating workload to meet production schedules Monitoring progress throughout the day Identifying bottlenecks and adjusting work as necessary Training and developing upholstery employees Teaching proper cutting, sewing, fitting, and upholstery techniques Communicating instructions and expectations clearly in both English and Spanish Reviewing work before it moves to the next stage Maintaining consistent quality expectations across the department Helping employees solve difficult or unusual upholstery conditions Holding employees accountable for quality, productivity, and material handling Communicating production concerns to shop leadership Keeping the department clean, organized, and safe Ensuring tools and equipment are used correctly and maintained properly This position should help create a department where employees know what is expected, have the information they need, and understand the level of quality Kings expects. What We're Looking For The ideal candidate will have: Ability to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish Significant professional upholstery experience Experience producing custom furniture, commercial seating, hospitality furniture, or similar high-quality upholstered products Strong sewing skills using industrial sewing equipment Strong fabric cutting and pattern-layout skills Ability to read and interpret plans, shop drawings, measurements, and production documentation Experience with pattern matching, repeats, grain direction, and difficult fabrics Knowledge of upholstery construction methods, foam, batting, webbing, fasteners, adhesives, and related materials Strong understanding of quality expectations for custom furniture Experience tracking fabric and production materials Previous supervisory, lead-person, or department leadership experience preferred Ability to train employees and explain techniques clearly Strong organization and attention to detail Ability to balance quality with production deadlines Ability to recognize problems early and determine practical solutions Dependability and willingness to take responsibility for department results What Success Looks Like A successful Upholstery Department Supervisor will know what is moving through the department, what materials are available, what is falling behind, and where quality needs attention. The department will produce work that is: Accurate to the drawings Properly cut and sewn Consistent from piece to piece Free from avoidable material defects or mismatches Completed with a high level of finish quality Delivered to the next stage of production on schedule Just as importantly, the Supervisor will help develop the people in the department so quality doesn't depend on only one person's hands. The Person We Need We're looking for someone who can look at a drawing and understand how the finished piece needs to come together. Someone who knows when a fabric needs special attention before the first cut is made. Someone who understands that a pattern repeat can completely change how material needs to be laid out. Someone who can sit down at an industrial sewing machine and produce professional work themselves. Someone who can spot poor craftsmanship before it leaves the department. And someone who can communicate clearly with the team, teach the work, and make sure expectations are understood. This is a supervisor position, but credibility in this department will come from knowing the craft. Full-time employees receive paid time off and paid holidays. Interested? If you have strong custom upholstery experience, can communicate effectively in both English and Spanish, and are interested in leading a department while remaining involved in the craft, we would like to hear from you. When applying, please describe the most complex type of upholstered furniture or commercial seating you have personally built , including your experience with cutting, sewing, pattern matching, and reading drawings.
