A Retail Store Manager manages a retail store, either an independent business or a store that is part of a large retail chain. Reviews and monitors merchandise sales, inventory and prices, and directs advertising and promotions. Supervises sales, warehouse, cleaning, maintenance and security staff and prepares work schedules. Responsible for resolving customer complaints.
We are a specialized millwork and cabinetry shop with a deep focus on historically accurate reproductions of windows, doors, and interior trim. We're looking for a dedicated and experienced Shop Manager to lead our team and oversee daily operations with a focus on production efficiency, team leadership, and quality craftsmanship.
Position Summary:
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of our cabinetry and millwork shop. This individual will lead a skilled team of woodworkers and manage all aspects of shop production, from scheduling and inventory to quality control and safety. A successful candidate will have hands-on experience in woodworking—particularly with custom and historic millwork—and strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Production Management:
Supervise and coordinate the fabrication of windows, doors, trim and custom cabinetry —especially period-accurate historic millwork.
Team Leadership:
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of millwrights, cabinetmakers and shop assistants; foster a positive, efficient, and quality-driven work culture.
Quality Control:
Ensure every project meets the high standards of craftsmanship, fit, and finish expected by our clients—especially with regards to historical accuracy.
Scheduling & Workflow Planning:
Develop and manage production timelines, coordinating with project managers to ensure deadlines are met without sacrificing quality.
Budgeting & Cost Control:
Oversee shop budgets, monitor expenses, and help ensure projects stay within financial goals.
Inventory & Resource Management:
Maintain proper levels of materials, tools, and equipment; manage vendor relationships and material ordering.
Safety Management:
Enforce safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized, and OSHA-compliant shop environment.
Problem Solving & Troubleshooting:
Anticipate production issues and respond swiftly with practical solutions.
Qualifications:
Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years in cabinetry or woodworking shop management, with proven experience in custom or historic millwork preferred.
Technical Expertise:
Deep knowledge of woodworking machinery, joinery techniques, finishing methods, and period-appropriate design details.
Leadership:
Strong supervisory skills with the ability to train, delegate, and inspire a team of skilled craftspeople.
Project Management:
Excellent planning, organizational, and multitasking skills to manage several custom jobs at once.
Communication:
Clear and professional communicator—capable of collaborating with design teams, project managers, and clients.
Budgeting & Financial Acumen:
