Job Description

Receiving Department Manager 4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 1630 Ashton Park Drive, Chesterfield, VA 23834 $65,000
  • $75,000 a year
  • Full-time Shepherd Electric Company, LLC. 4 reviews $65,000
  • $75,000 a year
  • Full-time About Shepherd Electric Supply Since 1892, Shepherd Electric Supply has been the first call when complex, time-critical electrical challenges need to be solved, and reliability truly matters.
We move materials accurately and on time, so contractors stay on schedule, projects stay on track, and customers never have to wonder if we will come through. Our success comes from people who take pride in doing things the right way — safely, accurately, and with care for teammates and customers alike. If you want to do work that matters at a company that notices, this is the place. Why This Role Matters Receiving is where accuracy begins. Every order that leaves this facility correctly traces back to freight that was received correctly — counted right, documented right, and entered into inventory right. When receiving runs clean, fulfillment runs clean. When receiving misses something, the entire operation pays for it downstream. The Receiving Manager owns that foundation. At a 100,000-square-foot distribution center running three shifts, the inbound function cannot be reactive — it has to be disciplined, fast, and accurate every day. You set the standard for your team, manage exceptions before they compound, and ensure the DC always knows exactly what it has.
Work Shift and Hours:
Monday
  • Friday, 6:00am
  • 3:00pm or depending on business needs.
Compensation Details:
The expected base salary for this position is between $65,000
  • $75,000 annually depending on experience. How This Role Connects to Our Compass Compass Values
  • What It Looks Like in This Role We Keep Our Promises
  • You own inbound outcomes. If freight arrives with exceptions — shortages, overages, damages — you resolve them before they enter inventory and become someone else's problem. The DC counts on receiving to get it right the first time. We Stay Hungry
  • You are always asking how receiving can be faster, more accurate, and better organized. You surface patterns, not just incidents, and push for root cause over quick fixes. We Grow Together
  • Your team grows because you invest in it. You develop your receiving leads, so the function does not depend on heroics. Cross-functional coordination — with purchasing, fulfillment, and branches — is part of how you show up. We Own It
  • You hold yourself accountable first. No excuses, no blame. When a process breaks down, you redesign it. When a person is struggling, you engage — you do not wait for someone else to prompt you. We Go Above & Beyond
  • You anticipate before the ask. Fulfillment knows your inbound is accurate. Inventory trusts your counts. The operation does not slow down waiting for receiving to catch up — because you make sure it never has to. Key Outcomes
  • Organized by what matters, not just what you do.
Inbound Receiving & Freight Accuracy Own all steps of the inbound process — freight verification, exception documentation, and inventory entry Ensure all inbound freight is counted accurately and exceptions — overages, shortages, damages — are resolved before product enters inventory Verify purchase orders against physical receipts on every inbound shipment — no assumptions, no shortcuts Flag recurring vendor or carrier discrepancy patterns to the Operations Manager for systemic review Inventory Integrity Own receiving-side inventory accuracy — bin location setup, product slotting, and discrepancy resolution Treat inventory discrepancies as signals requiring root cause investigation, not isolated incidents to close out Coordinate with the inventory control team to ensure inbound receipts are reflected accurately and promptly in the system Support cycle count and physical inventory processes to maintain ongoing accuracy Team Leadership & Development Select, onboard, and develop receiving staff so the team executes without depending on heroics Coach and hold team members accountable through direct, consistent feedback — not just documentation Delegate clearly, follow up on completion, and build a crew that holds itself to a standard Escalate performance or conduct concerns to the Operations Manager promptly and without delay Develop receiving leads so the function has depth and continuity across all three shifts Warehouse Operations Support Assist in daily operations as needed — shipping, inventory control, truck maintenance, wire management, and related duties Coordinate with fulfillment, dispatch, and purchasing when inbound delays or exceptions create downstream impact Maintain familiarity with Southern and Western Maryland, Washington DC suburbs, and Northern Virginia delivery area Be willing to cover other shifts when operational needs require it — the Laurel DC runs 24 hours, Monday through Friday Equipment, Facility & Safety Maintain safe, organized receiving operations — dock areas clear, equipment functional, hazards addressed before they become incidents Oversee pre-shift equipment inspections and ensure maintenance needs are reported and resolved proactively Operate and ensure team compliance with forklift, pallet jack, and reach truck certification requirements Model and enforce safety compliance — never treat it as a formality Process Improvement & Cross-Functional Coordination Surface inefficiencies, recurring errors, and workflow friction — and act on them, not just report them Recommend and test process changes that improve inbound accuracy, speed, or team capacity Communicate proactively with fulfillment, purchasing, and branch teams on inbound status and exception resolution Contribute to cross-DC consistency by sharing what works and adopting improvements from other locations What Success Looks Like
  • After 90 days, you and your supervisor should both be able to point to these markers: Inbound freight is received accurately, and every exception is documented and resolved before end of day Inventory reflects what was received — discrepancies are investigated, not ignored The receiving team knows what is expected and executes without being managed by the hour Fulfillment and inventory teams trust that inbound receipts are accurate and timely Equipment is inspected, certified, and operated safely every shift The Operations Manager trusts that receiving runs correctly when they are not watching At least one meaningful process improvement has been identified, tested, and implemented in your first 90 days Your receiving leads are developing and taking on more ownership over time Who Thrives Here•This role is a strong fit if: You own outcomes, not just activities — you do not manage from a distance, and you do not leave problems for the next shift You develop your team by raising their capability, not by covering their gaps You communicate directly — with your crew, with purchasing, with other departments, and with DC leadership You stay organized and accurate under pressure, especially when inbound volume spikes or freight arrives out of sequence You hold people accountable without making it adversarial — you set the standard and enforce it fairly You treat inventory discrepancies as signals, equipment failures as preventable, and safety shortcuts as non-negotiable You want to build a receiving operation that works without you in the room Qualifications & Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required 5+ years of warehouse management or receiving management experience with a workforce of similar size and scope Experience overseeing inbound freight operations in a distribution or wholesale environment preferred Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Outlook; familiarity with warehouse management systems Forklift, pallet jack, and reach truck certification required or ability to obtain through onsite training Familiarity with Southern and Western Maryland, Washington DC suburbs, and Northern Virginia delivery area preferred Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
