We are looking for someone who understands both sides of running a successful grocery department: creating a strong, mission-aligned product mix for our customers while maintaining disciplined purchasing, inventory, margins, labor, and overall financial performance. Main Market Co-op is a community-owned grocery store in downtown Spokane specializing in locally sourced, organic, natural, and sustainable products. We value strong relationships with local producers and vendors while also recognizing that a successful department requires thoughtful category management, careful purchasing, and attention to what our customers actually buy. The Grocery Manager reports directly to the General Manager and oversees the day-to-day operation and financial performance of the Grocery Department. This is a hands-on management position responsible for purchasing, category management, inventory, merchandising, staff supervision, and customer service. The regular schedule for this position is Sunday through Thursday, primarily during daytime hours , approximately 32-35 hours per week . Some schedule flexibility may occasionally be required based on store needs. Key Responsibilities Manage department purchasing within established budgets and buying parameters. Develop and maintain effective purchasing and organizational strategies for the Grocery Department. Actively manage grocery categories, including product assortment, pricing, placement, movement, promotions, and discontinuations. Analyze sales, purchases, inventory, margins, shrink, and product movement and adjust purchasing and merchandising accordingly. Set and meet departmental sales, COGS, margin, inventory, and labor goals in partnership with the General Manager. Review departmental financial reports, identify variances, and take timely corrective action when goals are not being met. Maintain appropriate inventory levels while minimizing overstocks, out-of-stocks, duplication, and shrink. Maintain Main Market's buying standards and commitment to local, organic, natural, and sustainably produced products while balancing customer demand and department financial performance. Coordinate orders and deliveries to maximize product availability and efficient inventory levels. Verify invoices, oversee proper receiving procedures, conduct price audits, and ensure credits and discrepancies are addressed. Manage vendor relationships within established store purchasing policies and procedures. Evaluate new products and existing product performance using sales, margin, movement, customer demand, and category needs. Maintain accurate product information, pricing, promotions, order numbers, and other data within Catapult/ECRS. Ensure shelf tags, shelf talkers, displays, and other department signage are accurate and maintained. Conduct regular inventory counts and maintain accurate inventory records. Monitor competitor pricing, product assortment, and trends within the natural and conventional grocery industry. Respond to customer requests and suggestions and maintain excellent customer service standards. Train, schedule, coach, and supervise Grocery Department staff. Manage department labor within established budget expectations. Assist with hiring, onboarding, performance management, and employee evaluations. Work collaboratively with other department managers and participate as an active member of Main Market's management team. Required Qualifications Minimum 1 year of retail management or supervisory experience . Minimum 2 years of retail grocery purchasing and merchandising experience . Demonstrated experience managing purchasing within an established budget. Demonstrated experience with category management , including evaluating product mix, sales performance, inventory movement, margins, pricing, and merchandising. Proven ability to understand and use departmental financial information, including sales, COGS, gross margin, shrink, inventory, and labor. Experience managing inventory and maintaining appropriate inventory levels. Experience setting financial or sales goals and taking corrective action when results are not meeting expectations. Grocery ordering and vendor-management experience. Strong merchandising and customer service experience. Experience supervising, training, scheduling, and coaching employees. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable working with POS, inventory, ordering, and other computer-based systems. Proficiency with Microsoft Office or comparable business software. Ability to work independently, prioritize competing responsibilities, and adapt to changing business needs. Dependable, organized, and able to work collaboratively as part of a management team. Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds. Current Washington State Food Worker Card or ability to obtain one upon hire. Preferred Qualifications Natural, organic, cooperative, or independent grocery experience. Experience with Catapult/ECRS preferred or another POS system Familiarity with local and regional food systems and natural grocery products.
