We are seeking a timely, self-motivated and computer-savvy individual to help maintain productivity and perform the opening/closing duties required on the second shift in our 6000sqft hardware store. Ideal candidates will have excellent computer skills, outstanding customer service abilities, a high level of attention to detail and the ability to direct/lead others. Position Summary The 2nd Shift Lead is a key leadership position working directly under the Store Manager and serving as the Store Manager's primary support on 2nd shift. The position is responsible for taking ownership of new employee training, customer service issues, and coordinating ongoing product knowledge training for the store team. The overall purpose of this position is to reduce the Store Manager's involvement in routine daily issues and free the Store Manager to focus on larger operational improvements, business development, and long-term company projects. The 2nd Shift Lead is expected to be a dependable, knowledgeable leader who can make sound day-to-day decisions and know when an issue should be escalated. Primary Responsibilities1. New Employee Training- Take ownership of the day-to-day training process for all new store employees.
- Conduct and coordinate new employee orientation and initial training.
- Train employees on store procedures, customer service expectations, safety practices, and daily operating procedures.
- Train new employees on point-of-sale procedures and basic transaction processes.
- Provide hands-on training in product location, product identification, and proper material handling.
- Ensure new employees understand company policies, procedures, and performance expectations.
- Coordinate with experienced employees or department specialists when additional training is required.
- Monitor new employee progress and provide coaching or additional training as needed.
- Communicate training progress, concerns, and recommendations to the Store Manager. 2. Customer Service & Issue Resolution
- Serve as the primary Second-shift contact for routine customer service issues and concerns.
- Assist customers with questions, complaints, returns, order issues, product concerns, and other service-related problems.
- Resolve customer issues within established company policies and authorization limits.
- Take ownership of customer problems rather than simply passing them to the Store Manager.
- Determine when an issue requires Store Manager involvement and provide the relevant information and recommended solution.
- Assist employees with difficult customer interactions and provide coaching when appropriate.
- Identify recurring customer service problems and recommend improvements to store procedures.
- Maintain a professional, helpful, and solution-oriented approach with every customer. 3. Product Knowledge Training
- Develop and maintain a regular product knowledge training schedule for the store team.
- Identify areas where employees need additional product knowledge or training.
- Coordinate training with vendors, manufacturers, and internal product specialists when appropriate.
- Schedule training sessions around store operations to minimize disruption to customers.
- Help create and maintain product knowledge training materials and reference guides.
- Track completion of scheduled training and communicate expectations to the team.
- Encourage employees to continuously expand their knowledge of products and services offered by the company. Secondary Responsibility4. Store Manager Special Projects
- Assist the Store Manager with special projects and initiatives as needed.
- Support projects intended to improve store operations, efficiency, customer service, employee development, or profitability.
- Assist with store reorganizations, process improvements, training materials, merchandising projects, product line changes, and other company initiatives.
- Take ownership of assigned project responsibilities and communicate progress, challenges, and completed work to the Store Manager. Leadership Expectations
- Act as an extension of the Store Manager and provide dependable second-shift leadership.
- Take ownership of routine problems and work toward resolution without unnecessary management involvement.
- Make reasonable decisions within established company policies and authority.
- Know when an issue can be handled independently and when it needs to be escalated.
- Bring solutions and recommendations—not just problems—to the Store Manager.
- Keep the Store Manager informed of significant customer, employee, or operational issues.
- Lead by example through strong customer service, product knowledge, work ethic, professionalism, and accountability.
- Treat employees fairly and respectfully while consistently reinforcing company expectations. QualificationsRequired
- Previous experience in a lumberyard, hardware store, building materials, fencing, construction, or closely related retail environment.
- Strong knowledge of building materials and hardware products.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to train and coach other employees.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work effectively with customers, vendors, and employees.
- Basic computer and point-of-sale system proficiency.
- Ability to safely lift and handle typical lumberyard and hardware store merchandise. Preferred
- Previous supervisory or lead experience.
- Experience training employees in a retail or building-materials environment.
- Experience with Epicor Eagle or a similar point-of-sale system.
- Strong knowledge of lumber, building materials, hardware, fencing, and related products.
- Forklift experience. Key Performance Expectations

- The store maintains an effective and ongoing product knowledge training program.
- Routine customer service issues are resolved promptly without unnecessary Store Manager involvement.

- Assigned Store Manager special projects are completed accurately and on time.
- The Store Manager is able to spend less time handling routine daily issues and more time on larger company improvements.
Position Schedule:
Tuesday 10:30am- 7:00pm, Wednesday
- Friday 11:00am-7:00 pm, Saturday 7:15am
- 5:30pm
