JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Shop Manager leads the day-to-day operations of the De Pere customization shop and directly manages the Customization Specialists. This role is accountable for safe, organized, high-quality and on-time completion of generator and engine customization, sub-assemblies, testing, material flow and related shop work. The Shop Manager coordinates labor and priorities with the Customization Project Manager, develops team capability, removes production obstacles and maintains clear communication on schedule, quality, cost and risk.

LEADERSHIP AND OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead, coach, schedule and support the Customization Specialists; set clear daily priorities and reinforce accountability for safety, quality, productivity and teamwork.
• Plan shop capacity and assign work based on project requirements, employee skill, material availability, equipment needs and committed completion dates.
• Coordinate closely with the Customization Project Manager on project scope, drawings, work orders, material readiness, customer commitments, change conditions and status updates.
• Conduct regular production huddles and communicate workload, priorities, constraints, handoffs and expected completion dates.
• Monitor work in process and take timely action to resolve labor, tooling, material, vendor, engineering, quality or scheduling issues.
• Provide hands-on technical guidance and assist with customization work when needed to protect safety, quality or schedule.
• Develop team members through cross-training, practical coaching, documented expectations and timely performance feedback.

SAFETY, QUALITY AND SHOP STEWARDSHIP

• Own daily shop safety execution, including proper PPE, housekeeping, safe lifting and material movement, equipment inspections and compliance with established procedures.
• Stop work and escalate conditions that create an unacceptable safety, quality, environmental or customer risk.
• Verify that work is completed to approved customer specification and requirements.
• Ensure required inspections, measurements, testing results, redlines, as-built information and closeout documentation are complete and accurate.
• Maintain an orderly shop using visual controls, designated storage, clean work areas and disciplined tool and material management.
• Coordinate preventive maintenance and repairs for shop machinery, overhead cranes, forklifts, welders, plasma cutters, load banks, test equipment and facility systems.
• Support general building maintenance and ensure chemicals, compressed gases, waste and hazardous materials are handled and stored appropriately.

PRODUCTION AND CUSTOMER SUPPORT

• Oversee completion of generator and engine customization, fabrication, sub-assemblies, electrical and mechanical work, equipment testing and related shop activities.
• Balance speed and flexibility with precise standards for workmanship, fit, finish, function and documentation.
• Partner with internal teams, vendors and suppliers to support material flow, outsourced work, inspections and project execution.
• Communicate schedule or scope risks early and provide practical recovery options.
• Support continuous improvement efforts that increase throughput, reduce rework, improve material flow and shorten lead times.
• Assist with customer, vendor or factory visits when shop review, technical input or acceptance testing is required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE

• Demonstrated leadership experience in a fabrication, manufacturing, power generation, heavy equipment or similar shop environment.
• Working knowledge of fabrication and welding, mechanical assembly, A/C and D/C electrical systems, engines and power generation equipment.
• Ability to read and apply blueprints, sketches, engineering drawings, wiring diagrams and written work instructions.
• Ability to use sound judgment, organize competing priorities, meet deadlines and remain flexible in a changing, fast-paced environment.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively across departments and with customers, vendors and suppliers.
• Comfort using Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel and applicable work order, scheduling and documentation systems.
• Ability to operate or become qualified to operate forklifts and overhead cranes and to use hand tools, power tools and test equipment.
• Valid driver's license and ability to work overtime as business needs require.

Preferred:

supervisory experience, power generation experience, and formal training or certifications related to welding, electrical systems, safety or continuous improvement.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping and use of hands and wrists for repeated movements.
• Periodic sitting and computer work, including reading drawings, schedules, work orders and reports.
• Regular lifting and/or moving up to 75 pounds, with appropriate assistance or lifting equipment when required.
• Ability to hear normal conversations in person or by phone and to communicate in a shop environment.
• Ability to see at distance, distinguish color and read computer screens, drawings, labels and measurements.
• Ability to drive a vehicle.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Work is performed in the shop, office and outdoors, depending on project and operational needs.
• Noise levels may range from moderate to very loud, including exposure to engine testing areas.
• Exposure may include temperature variation, vibration, fumes, gases, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, powered equipment and fabrication processes.
• Required PPE must be worn for the task and work area.
• Work is subject to precise measures of safety, quality, schedule and quantity.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

• Computer and general office equipment.
• Overhead cranes, forklifts and material-handling equipment.
• Basic hand tools and electric or pneumatic power tools.
• Welders, plasma cutters and fabrication machinery.
• Electrical, mechanical and generator test equipment, including load banks as applicable.
