ABOUT ESSENCE
Essence Jiu Jitsu & Wellness is a growing, family-focused jiu-jitsu, fitness and wellness company built around technical excellence, personal growth, community and a premium member experience. As Essence continues to grow, we are building the people, systems and operating standards needed to deliver a consistent experience across current and future locations.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking for an Operations & Membership Sales Lead to help own the day-to-day member experience, sales execution and operational excellence of our Walnut Creek location. This is not a traditional front-desk role. We are looking for someone who wants to help run and grow a business. The position begins as a part-time, hands-on operations and membership sales role, with the opportunity to grow into a full-time salaried General Manager and future multi-site operations leadership position based on performance, business needs and continued growth. Essence is also preparing for a future Walnut Creek relocation/new-location opening, and this role is expected to participate in the transition, setup and opening process.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
  • Create a welcoming, high-energy and professional experience for members, families, prospects and guests from the moment they enter the facility.
  • Manage front-desk execution, member questions, check-ins, trial experiences, tours and day-to-day member communication.
  • Follow up with leads, conduct sales conversations, present membership options and help convert qualified prospects into members.
  • Support revenue growth through memberships, retail, private training, corporate opportunities and other approved offerings.
  • Execute and uphold opening, midday, pre-class, post-class and closing standards.
  • Maintain exceptional facility presentation, including front desk, training areas, retail, equipment, restrooms, locker areas and common spaces.
  • Identify operational issues, take ownership of appropriate solutions and escalate maintenance or business issues when needed.
  • Follow and help improve standard operating procedures, checklists, workflows and accountability systems.
  • Support inventory, retail presentation, supplies and other recurring operational needs.
  • Partner with instructors and leadership to create smooth class transitions and a consistent member experience.
  • Assist with the transition, setup and opening of Essence's future Walnut Creek location.
  • Develop toward increased responsibility for team accountability, location performance and eventually multi-site operations.
OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE
At Essence, operational excellence means that the facility, team and member experience consistently meet the same high standard regardless of the day, class or team member working. This role will be expected to notice the details, take ownership and help ensure that standards are followed rather than waiting to be told what needs attention.
WHO WILL THRIVE HERE
  • Naturally outgoing, approachable and comfortable starting conversations with new people.
  • Positive, energetic and professional, with strong interpersonal skills with adults and children.
  • Competitive and motivated by goals while maintaining a service-first approach.
  • Highly organized, dependable and attentive to details others may overlook.
  • Comfortable taking initiative, solving problems and working independently.
  • Coach-able, accountable and interested in developing into a leadership role.
  • Able to balance hospitality, sales and operational responsibilities in a fast-moving environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • 2+ years of customer-facing professional experience.
  • 1+ year of relevant experience in sales, hospitality, fitness/wellness, operations, etc.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability, initiative, organization and attention to detail.
  • Comfort working in a sales-driven environment and being accountable to measurable goals.
  • Comfort learning and using CRM, point-of-sale and other business software.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the role, including occasionally lifting and moving items up to approximately 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work primarily in Walnut Creek and provide occasional support in Danville as business needs require.
PREFERRED, NOT REQUIRED
  • Fitness, wellness or boutique fitness experience
  • Membership or consultative sales experience
  • Hospitality or premium customer-service experience
  • Retail sales or merchandising experience

  • Additional sales commission under the applicable Essence written commission plan.
  • Free Essence membership.
Discounts:

  • Paid sick leave in accordance with applicable California law.
  • Meaningful growth opportunity toward full-time salaried General Manager and future multi-site operations leadership roles; advancement is based on performance, business needs and available opportunities.
