Job Summary Plant Specialist & Sales Person The Assistant Plant Sales Manager is a unique, hands-on position that works across both Grelen Nursery and The Market at Grelen , providing an opportunity to be involved in multiple sides of Grelen's plant business. The position will generally be divided approximately 50% between supporting Grelen Nursery's landscape and nursery operations and 50% supporting retail plant sales at The Market at Grelen. This position requires extensive plant knowledge, excellent customer service skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to confidently identify and locate plant material throughout our nursery. Knowledge of plant health, pests, diseases, and pest management is a significant plus. This person will work closely with the Sales Plant Manager, Landscape Division, Nursery staff, and Market team to ensure that customers and landscape clients receive knowledgeable service and that Grelen's plant material is accurately represented, located, maintained, and sold. Retail Plant Sales & The Market Provide knowledgeable, friendly customer service by helping customers select trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and other plant material appropriate for their needs, site conditions, and preferences. Provide expert advice regarding planting, watering, pruning, fertilization, and ongoing plant care. Maintain an extensive working knowledge of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and other plant material, including varieties, mature sizes, growing requirements, and appropriate landscape uses. Help drive plant sales by identifying customer needs and recommending appropriate and complementary plant material. Assist the Sales Plant Manager with the daily operation and organization of the retail plant department. Maintain the health and appearance of retail plant material through watering, pruning, fertilizing, deadheading, grooming, and other routine care. Monitor plant material for pests, diseases, and environmental stress. Knowledge of pest management, plant disease diagnosis, and integrated pest management practices is a significant plus. Receive, organize, price, label, and display incoming plant material. Create attractive and inspiring plant displays featuring seasonal selections, new arrivals, specimen plants, and complementary varieties. Help maintain accurate plant signage, pricing, inventory information, and product descriptions. Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and visually appealing retail sales area. Nursery, Landscape & Client Support Work approximately half of the position with Grelen Nursery and the Landscape Division, assisting with plant sourcing, availability, client needs, and other nursery-related responsibilities. Review landscape and customer plant lists and physically verify plant material in the nursery, confirming that the exact varieties, quantities, and requested sizes are available. Assist the Landscape Division in locating appropriate plant material for upcoming projects and identifying substitutions or alternatives when necessary. Develop a strong familiarity with the layout and inventory of Grelen's nursery fields and container areas. Host and assist l arge retail and wholesale customers, including accompanying clients through the nursery to view and select specific trees, shrubs, and specimen plant material. Confidently discuss plant characteristics and help customers compare available specimens, sizes, and varieties. Assist landscape designers, contractors, and other industry professionals in locating plant material appropriate for their projects. Help coordinate communication between the nursery, Landscape Division, The Market, and customers regarding plant availability and selection. Assist with summer inventory counts of Grelen's field-grown trees and shrubs, which may include physically walking nursery fields, identifying plant material, verifying sizes and quantities, and helping maintain accurate inventory records. Assist with other nursery, landscape, and plant sales responsibilities as needed, particularly during peak seasons. Work collaboratively across Grelen Nursery and The Market, stepping in where plant expertise and additional support are needed. Qualifications The ideal candidate will have extensive horticultural and plant knowledge , particularly regarding trees and shrubs, and should be comfortable identifying plant material both in the retail environment and in the nursery field.

The ability to get along with a variety of personalities and be flexible from day to day. Strong customer service and sales skills. Excellent organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail. The ability to read and accurately work from detailed plant lists. The ability and willingness to drive through the nursery fields and locate specific plant material. Knowledge of plant pests, diseases, and pest management practices is a major plus. Previous nursery, horticulture, landscape, garden center, or plant sales experience is strongly preferred. A willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform the physical tasks associated with a working nursery and garden center. This is an excellent position for someone who loves plants, enjoys working with people, and wants to expand their horticultural knowledge while gaining experience in retail sales, wholesale nursery operations, and the landscape industry.
