The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an "at-will" relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee.

Duties:

Serves as the on-site Archeological Monitor during the construction of the Secondary Border Barrier within Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Provides cultural resource protection through direct monitoring, field documentation, condition assessments, and immediate reporting of discoveries or potential impacts. Conducts a formal Damage Assessment for all natural and cultural resources affected by construction activities.

Construction Monitoring:

Monitor all ground-disturbing activities associated with the secondary border barrier construction.

Review design plans, construction documents, and mitigation measures to understand project scope and constraints. Maintain flexible scheduling aligned with contractor work sequences to ensure presence during excavation, grading, trenching, or any activities with potential archaeological impact. Notify the Superintendent and Resources Manager in the event of archaeological discoveries, artifacts, features, or human remains. 70%

Damage Assessment & Reporting:

Conduct field evaluations of any natural and cultural resources impacted by construction. Assess commercial, scientific, and cultural value loss as defined under ARPA-aligned methodologies. Prepare a Damage Assessment Report documenting extent, context, nature of impacts, and follow-up actions. Provide photographic documentation, mapping, GPS locations, and supporting narrative. 15%

Archaeological Field Survey & Documentation:

Conduct pedestrian surveys in areas adjacent to construction to identify previously undocumented resources. Record archaeological features, create field maps, complete forms, take photographs, and perform basic artifact identification and analysis. Prepare documentation for curation according to NPS standards. 10%

Condition Assessments:

Conduct condition assessments of known archaeological sites within or near the construction impact area.

Document erosion, vibration, mechanical disturbance, or other construction-related stressors. 5%

Qualifications:

Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in professional archaeological fieldwork, including construction monitoring in the U.S. Southwest

OR MA/MS

Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or close related field preferred; BA/BS acceptable with equivalent professional experience. Experience working with prehistoric and historic cultural resources typical of the Sonoran Desert region. Familiarity with NAGPRA, NEPA/Section 106, ARPA, and tribal consultation processes. Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards for Archaeology. Proficiency with GPS units, GIS-based mapping, and standard archaeological field tools. Strong technical writing skills for reporting and condition assessment documentation. Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel

Required Safety Gear:

Use of PPE required (hard hat, safety vest, eye protection, boots, etc.). Fieldwork may involve exposure to extreme heat, wildlife, and remote desert environments. Physical requirements: The enrollee may be required to hike long distances (sometimes 5 miles roundtrip) in a physically strenuous terrain while carrying equipment and supplies (up to 40 lbs). The enrollee may encounter insects, snakes, and poisonous plants in the field. In addition, field conditions may be hot, cold or wet. Tasks may require the enrollee to stand, bend, stoop or kneel for extended periods of time. Ability to safely navigate rugged Sonoran Desert terrain in high temperatures and remote conditions. Ability to walk multiple miles per day, and work near heavy construction equipment.
