Job Description and Responsibilities:
Responsible for conducting and supervising Phase I (inventory-level) surveys. This involves (1) conducting pre-field research, (2) directing fieldwork and laboratory analyses, and (3) preparing technical reports. To a lesser extent there will be participation in Phase II (National Register evaluation) and Phase III excavation projects. Assist the Principal Investigator in making site-specific recommendations for NRHP eligibility and if necessary, additional or future work. Supervise project field technicians in the field and office including training, assigning tasks, monitoring accuracy, and efficiency. Responsible for project logistical arrangements such as enforcing company policies/procedures, following project and state guidelines for data collection, documentation, and reporting, and tracking project hours to stay within established budgets. Responsible for organizing and analyzing project data (pre-field research, the results of fieldwork, conducting artifact and data analyses, drafting site maps), and producing appropriate technical reports.
Qualifications:
A graduate degree in Anthropology or Archaeology is preferred. However, experience will be considered in lieu of a graduate degree. A BA/BS degree in archaeology, cultural resource management, anthropology, or other related field is required. At least 2-3 years' experience supervising archaeological fieldwork is preferred. Experience at all levels of archaeological investigation is preferred but supervising Phase I archaeological surveys is a must. Experience in the US, specifically the Midwest and Ohio Valley is preferred. No specific area of specialization is required, but priority will be given to archaeologists who also have experience/training in historic artifact analysis, lithic analysis, ceramic analysis, geoarchaeology, geophysics, zooarchaeology, ethnobotany, or archival research. A demonstrated ability to write clearly and professionally. Previous experience writing CRM reports is preferred. Detail oriented, strong organizational skills, and technologically proficient in basic computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. Experience in databases and digital data collection is a plus. Ability to use GPS units, compasses, and maps and navigate efficiently in remote areas. Must be a licensed driver with a safe driving record and be able to operate motor vehicles in a safe manner on roadways. It is imperative that candidates be able to work 8-10 hour days in a variety of field conditions. Ability to travel; there will be frequent stays away from the office from as few as 1-2 days to up to 9-10 days at a time. Hiking, stooping, bending, and lifting are essential functions of this position. A team-oriented and collaborative approach is essential, and a solutions-oriented mindset is appreciated. Schedule and Compensation:
Relocation to Evansville, Indiana or a 60 mile radius, is required. Compensation for relocation can be discussed. The office work week is Monday-Friday, 8 hour days. The field week hours vary to meet specific project demands. Weekends are possible but not typical. Field days are typically 8-10 hours but also may be adjusted due to project needs or weather conditions. A typical office to field ratio could be 40:60 to start out with office time increasing commensurate with supervisory project work-load. Single occupancy hotel rooms are provided for all field projects. Per diem is dependent on specific project requirements, but it is typically $50/day paid in cash prior to field start.
