Job Description

Description:
Mabbett & Associates, Inc. (Mabbett®), an award-winning leader in environmental, health and safety (EH&S) consulting and engineering, is looking for a Part-Time Field Archaeologist to join their Natural Resources team. This opportunity suits an experienced field archaeologist seeking flexible, project-based assignments. The role involves working with a collaborative group conducting Phase I surveys, Phase II site testing, and overseeing environmental compliance, mostly along the Eastern Seaboard, with some projects extending into the Central United States. Travel is a necessity, as work takes place on field sites—including undeveloped land and construction zones—and occurs year-round outdoors, sometimes in harsh weather. The selected candidate will be a part-time, on call resource mobilized in advance for projects typically lasting between one and four weeks.
Responsibilities:
Perform shovel test pits (STPs), test units, visual pedestrian surveys, and artifact identification under supervision of the Field Chief and Principal Investigator. Accurately record field data, soil profiles (using Munsell charts and USDA textures), photo logs, and map data digitally with handheld GPS/mobile apps (ArcGIS Field Maps). Help with equipment maintenance, packing gear, and setting up/breaking down sites. Follow company safety protocols, comply with land use permits, and adhere to cultural resource regulations at the state level (including NY SHPO practices).
Note:
Travel, lodging, and per diem provided for overnight project assignments.
Requirements:
Master's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, or a related field (fulfills 36 CFR Part 61 / SOI standards). 1-2 years of CRM field experience, ideally in the Northeastern or Mid-Atlantic U.S. Must meet Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for upcoming short-term Cultural Resource Management (CRM) fieldwork. Demonstrated ability to recognize prehistoric and historic-period regional artifacts. Experience identifying soil horizons (stratigraphy, Munsell, texture). Proficient with Microsoft Office® products. Familiarity with digital field mapping and GPS data collection. Valid U.S. driver's license, reliable transportation, ability to drive various vehicles, and willingness to travel to field sites. Able to sit, walk, stand, and carry equipment for extended periods; must handle adverse weather and rugged, brushy terrain. Ability to lift equipment up to 40 lbs. and perform demanding physical tasks. Awareness of regional environmental hazards (such as ticks and poison ivy). 40-hour
