The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services. Why does the job exist? The archaeologist at the Office of Archaeological Studies carries out the fieldwork for archaeological projects and assists in the analysis and authorship of reports detailing the results of fieldwork. This position primarily supports the enterprise functions of OAS but also provides support for the outreach and research programs. How does it get done? The archaeologist performs technical work and support for archaeological survey, test excavations, monitoring, and data recovery of cultural material recovered from archaeological sites. They also author archaeological reports and conduct laboratory analysis. Who are the customers? Private clients, state and federal agencies, Native American tribes, and the general public. Minimum Qualification Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology, Archeology, History, Geography, American Studies, or a similar discipline as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification and four (4) years of experience providing technical GIS support, including an understanding of New Mexico archeology or the archaeology of the American Southwest. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Working Conditions Work is performed in the field and in an office setting. Late hours, weekends, on-call and callback work may be required.
