The Southeast Region is seeking one Wildlife Technician (4.75 months) to assist with the regional wildlife management program in Pocatello, Idaho, and the surrounding area.

This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a variety of wildlife management projects and species while working throughout southeastern Idaho. The area also offers outstanding recreational opportunities, including hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities.

  General Information
  Applicants must be willing to amodate a flexible work schedule, including early mornings, long days, weekends, and work periods of up to seven consecutive days.

Housing is NOT provided.

The successful applicant must be able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds, with occasional lifting or carrying of up to 100 pounds for short distances, and work long, strenuous hours outdoors in extreme weather conditions, with or without reasonable amodations.

Qualifications

It is preferred that applicants possess a Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology or other closely related field; or equivalent training and work experience. Proficient in the use of Microsoft applications and experience using topographical maps/software and GPS is a plus. Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license. Candidate must be willing to work independently outside in areas without cell phone coverage.

Responsibilities

The Wildlife Technician will primarily assist with wildlife management activities throughout the Southeast Region. Winter and early spring responsibilities may include:

• Monitoring radio-collared ungulates
  
• Collecting chronic wasting disease (CWD) samples
  
• Monitoring sage-grouse and sharp-tailed grouse leks
  
• Deploying and maintaining remote cameras
  
• Assisting with wildlife depredation and human-wildlife conflicts
  
• Conducting wildlife surveys and collecting biological data
  During April and May, primary responsibilities will shift toward sage-grouse and sharp-tailed grouse monitoring and implementation of the Department's Avian Predation Management Plan.

This work includes hazing American White Pelicans from portions of the Blackfoot River and Blackfoot Reservoir to minimize predation on Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout. During pelican management activities, the successful applicant may be required to stay on-site in a state-provided camp trailer. Per diem for groceries will be provided.

The technician may also assist with projects across the region's wildlife, fisheries, and habitat programs. These activities may include fish and wildlife surveys, habitat restoration projects such as planting and fence repair, and responding to ungulate crop depredation issues.

The technician will work both independently and as part of a team and will be expected to follow standardized protocols and accurately collect and record biological data. This position also involves regular interaction with the public on topics including hunting, fishing, outdoor recreation, and human-wildlife conflicts.

Additional wildlife, fisheries, and habitat management duties may be assigned as needed.
