Duties include cleaning and sanitizing of the microbiology lab, maintenance of scales, water baths, pH meters, and incubators, preparation and sterilization of media, restocking of media and supplies, disposal of recycling, and discarding samples post analysis. This position reports to the Microbiology Manager Major Accountabilities Perform duties under the general supervision of the Microbiology Manager. Operation of laboratory equipment including thermometers, autoclaves, dishwasher, scales, water baths, pH meters, incubators, and other equipment. Maintains a safe and secure working environment, complies with all company policies and procedures on safety and ethical conduct. Maintain organization and cleanliness of the microbiology lab including media preparation, lab I, lab II, PCR lab, and log-in areas. Cleans tools and equipment to support the daily operation of the microbiology department. Helps with restock of media and supplies to support the daily operation of the microbiology department. Breaks down boxes and discards recycling. Discards samples post testing to include inactivating positive samples, discarding liquid waste, autoclaving and removal of waste, and cleaning of sample bins. Maintains cleanliness of floors, water baths, lab benches, hoods, sample retention area, and other areas as assigned. Attention to detail in all duties and activities. Practices good aseptic technique when required. Follows Quality Systems policies and completes required documentation. Perform other related duties and assignments as required. Working Environment and Physical Demands Indoors temperature-controlled office/laboratory environment; the use of hearing protection may be required at times, along with other personal protective equipment as necessary. Position requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk. Manual dexterity is required. Ability to see details at close range, listen to and understand spoken words and phrases, communicate information and ideas verbally and in writing so that others will understand, read and understand standard operating procedures and ideas presented in writing, ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so that others will understand. Must meet the physical abilities level of three (3) as determined by the U.S. Department of Labor. Requires the use of telephones, paging system, PC, fax, copying and other office machines and equipment. Requires the use of laboratory equipment including balances, autoclaves, pH meter, conductivity meter, thermometers, stomacher, and other sample preparation equipment.
