$15.31- $17.63 per hour SUMMARY The Vector Control Technician
- Field performs field inspections, larval surveillance, adult mosquito monitoring, and pesticide applications throughout Utah County as part of the Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Field Surveillance & Treatment Conduct systematic inspections of assigned zones to identify mosquito breeding sources. Sample standing water to collect larvae and assess population levels. Apply larvicides using hand, backpack, and ATV-mounted equipment. Assist with nighttime ULV (Ultra-Low Volume) adulticide operations as assigned. Maintain accurate treatment logs, larval sampling data, and inspection records. GIS & Digital Field Reporting Record field activities using iPads and GIS-based mosquito abatement software. Update habitat maps, treatment zones, and breeding site information. Report significant findings, high-risk breeding areas, or program needs to the appropriate supervisor. Equipment, Vehicles & Safety Maintain and clean equipment including sprayers, ATVs, PPE, and field tools. Follow all pesticide label requirements, safety protocols, and county regulations. Operate County vehicles safely and report any maintenance needs. Support for Integrated Team Operations Assist other program areas—including aerial, larval control, ULV, and laboratory teams—when needed. Support trap deployment and retrieval upon request from the Lab Coordinator. Participate in team briefings, safety meetings, and ongoing training. Public Interaction Interact respectfully and professionally with residents encountered in the field. Provide general information about mosquito control when appropriate and refer complex inquiries to supervisors. Emergency Response & Flexibility Respond to operational needs, weather-based changes, or public health emergencies as assigned. Carry assigned communication devices during work hours.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of mosquito biology and basic water ecology Knowledge of pesticide safety and mosquito control principles Knowledge of GPS/GIS-based mapping tools and digital reporting systems Skilled in safe operation of sprayers, ATVs, hand tools, and field equipment Ability to follow directions, meet deadlines, and work independently Ability to accurately document field activities and maintain detailed records Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors Ability to work outdoors in challenging environments for extended periodsSUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position has no supervisory responsibility. Daily task direction may come from program Coordinators, but overall operational authority is held by the Director and Operations Supervisor.WORK ENVIRONMENT
Outdoor fieldwork in heat, cold, humidity, rain, and uneven terrain Exposure to mosquitoes, chemicals, insects, and potential allergens Use of PPE such as gloves, goggles, masks, and protective clothing Occasional interaction with irate or concerned members of the public Frequent operation of County vehicles and ATVsPHYSICAL DEMANDS
Lift and carry 40 lbs regularly and 60 lbs occasionally Walk, stand, stoop, kneel, and climb through wetlands, ditches, and varied terrain Perform repetitive hand and arm movements for sampling and spraying Maintain prolonged attention to detail during inspectionsPOSITION TYPE / EXPECTED HOURS
Seasonal position (generally April-October) Work hours vary—may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and overtime Nighttime ULV spray shifts may be required TRAVEL Local travel throughout Utah County No overnight travel expectedREQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 1.
High school diploma or equivalent. 2. No prior mosquito abatement experience required. 3. Equivalent experience in outdoor work, agriculture, biology, or related tasks is beneficial. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Experience in vector control, agriculture, ecology, or outdoor labor Experience with GIS or electronic field-reporting systems Experience operating ATVs, sprayers, or similar equipmentADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
