Job Description

Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate- Immunology, Stem Cell Biology, and Regenerative Medicine University of Connecticut (UConn), Storrs, Connecticut A Postdoctoral Fellow position or Research associate available in the laboratory of Dr. Laijun Lai at the University of Connecticut (UConn), Storrs campus. The laboratory conducts NIH-funded research at the intersection of immunology, stem cell biology, regenerative medicine, aging, autoimmunity, and cancer immunology . Our laboratory investigates fundamental mechanisms regulating T-cell development, thymic function, immune tolerance, and immune aging, with the goal of translating these discoveries into novel cell- and protein-based therapies. The laboratory currently has NIH-funded research projects and provides a highly collaborative environment for postdoctoral training and career development. Research Areas Current research projects include: Stem cell-based thymic regeneration and immune tolerance We use embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to generate thymic epithelial progenitors (TEPs) and thymic epithelial cells (TECs). These studies investigate mechanisms of thymic epithelial development and explore the therapeutic potential of ESC/iPSC-derived cells for restoring T-cell immunity during aging and genetic immunodeficiency and for inducing antigen-specific immune tolerance in autoimmune diseases. Recombinant protein therapeutics for immune aging and age-related disease We use protein engineering to develop recombinant FOXN1 fusion proteins that promote thymic regeneration and T-cell development. Current studies investigate their therapeutic potential in age-related T-cell immunodeficiency and other age-associated pathologies. Novel immune checkpoint pathways in autoimmunity and cancer Using bioinformatics, molecular biology, and protein engineering, we have identified novel immune regulatory molecules, including ERMAP and TAPBPL. Current studies investigate their receptors, signaling mechanisms, and therapeutic potential using recombinant proteins and antibodies in animal models of autoimmune disease and cancer. The successful candidate will participate in one or more of these research programs depending on experience and scientific interests. Responsibilities Design and conduct research experiments; Perform cellular, molecular, and immunological studies; Work with ESCs/iPSCs and differentiated cell populations, depending on the project; Perform flow cytometry and functional immune-cell assays; Conduct molecular biology, protein, and gene-expression analyses; Use mouse models of immune-mediated and other human diseases; Analyze and interpret experimental data; Assist with mentoring graduate and undergraduate researchers as appropriate.
Qualifications Required qualifications:
Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in immunology, cell biology, molecular biology, stem cell biology, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline;
For Research Associate:
M.A. or M.S. in biology or a closely related field, and at least three years of post-degree experience. Strong research experience and evidence of scientific productivity; Ability to design experiments, analyze data, and work independently; Ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment. Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: Immunology and T-cell biology; Flow cytometry and cell sorting; Mammalian cell culture; ESC or iPSC culture and differentiation; Molecular and cellular biology; Recombinant protein expression and protein engineering; Gene editing, including CRISPR/Cas9; Mouse genetics, mouse colony management, and in vivo disease models; Autoimmunity, cancer immunology, neuroimmunology, or aging research; Histology, immunofluorescence, or confocal microscopy; and Bioinformatics or analysis of high-dimensional biological data. Candidates are not expected to have expertise in all of these areas. Research Environment UConn provides a multidisciplinary research environment with resources and core facilities supporting flow cytometry, stem cell research, genomics, proteomics, microscopy, animal models, and mouse genome modification . The laboratory maintains collaborations with investigators at UConn and other national and international institutions. The Storrs campus is located in Connecticut with access to the broader biomedical research communities in Connecticut, Boston, and New York.
Application Interested candidates should submit:
A cover letter describing research experience, scientific interests, and career goals; A current CV , including a publication list; and Names and contact information for three references . Please send application materials and inquiries to: Dr.
