You will lead an independent stem cell research projects focused on human pluripotent stem cell culture, 2D and 3D differentiation into retinal neurons, including retinal ganglion cellsf. We are a diverse, multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing regenerative ophthalmology and cell transplantation. Our research integrates expertise in stem cell biology, cell therapy, retinal development, retinal cell biology, retinal electrophysiology, transplantation, small and large animal models of disease, and bioinformatics. The laboratory is supported by grants from the Gilbert Family Foundation, U.S. Department of Defense and other. The University of Pittsburgh, the UPMC Vision Institute, and the Department of Ophthalmology provide an outstanding environment for research and career development. Researchers have access to state-of-the-art facilities for stem cell biology, molecular and cellular research, advanced imaging, and functional studies in animal models, as well as high-performance computing resources for image analysis and bioinformatics. The department offers excellent mentoring opportunities supported by multiple training grants. Alumni from the Baranov Lab have successfully transitioned to careers in academia, biotechnology, industry, and clinical research. The University of Pittsburgh together with UPMC Enterprise also provides the unique opportunity for start-ups in life sciences and biotechnology. This position requires hands-on work with stem cells and organoids, including weekends and holidays.

  • Highly motivated, organized, and detail-oriented with a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative research environment.
  • Flexibility to participate in a rotating weekend schedule for stem cell maintenance.
  • Demonstrated experience with human pluripotent stem cell culture and organoids.
  • Experience with molecular biology, immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and image analysis is desirable.
  • Experience with electrophysiology is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Maintain and culture human pluripotent stem cells and primary cells, including the preparation of cell culture media, reagents, and supplements.
  • Perform 2D and 3D differentiation of stem cells into retinal ganglion cells.
  • Design, conduct, and troubleshoot experiments independently.
  • Conduct functional assays, electrophysiological recordings, immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and quantitative image analysis.
  • Analyze, interpret, and present experimental data at laboratory meetings, institutional seminars, and national or international scientific conferences.
  • Prepare manuscripts, grant applications, and progress reports.
  • Supervise and mentor graduate students, undergraduate students, and research staff.
  • Maintain accurate experimental records and ensure compliance with institutional biosafety and laboratory safety regulations.
