The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida is seeking to hire a Full-time hybrid Ecologist for our Fish and Wildlife Department (FWD). This is a professional position of service to the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida ("Tribe") requiring a specialized scientific knowledge base in natural resource management, conservation, and restoration, particularly pertaining to fisheries and wildlife. The Regional Ecologist is responsible for collaboration with regional agencies and partners, field assessments, ecological analyses, developing conceptual models, reporting findings, and supporting management recommendations for the Miccosukee Fish & Wildlife Department (FWD). Primary Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Technical meetings with regional collaborators, Interagency co-stewardship activities Conducting field assessments, data processing, data analyses Developing ecological conceptual models Contributing to formation of management recommendations Secondary Responsibilities include but are not limited to: overseeing contracts with regional collaborators, designing field surveys, conducting and data logging field surveys, assisting FWD with non-regional operations, writing grants, writing reports, and community outreach events. Remote work schedule will be up to two days per work week. Must be able to travel.
Education/Training :
A Bachelor of Science (B.S) degree is required, but a Master's of Science (M.S) is preferred in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field. Must include demonstrated professional experience in ecology in a research lab, government agency, non-governmental organization, or private company.
Experience:
The incumbent must have experience in studying, surveying, and managing fish and wildlife resources: recreational experience may also be considered valid. Experience in the regional (i.e. North Florida) forestry, wildlife ecology, riverine or coastal ecology, and/or biology is strongly preferred. The incumbent should have experience planning, coordinating, collaborating, and contracting with other research or management agencies. The incumbent must be able to readily identify native and exotic fauna in Florida, especially the specific region. Must have a comprehensive understanding of environmental drivers, ecology, wildlife interactions, and behavior of fish and wildlife especially of game species and species of ecological concern. Must have experience in data logging, organizations, and processing. Should have basic understanding of mechanics, such that they can perform reasonable maintenance and repairs of equipment when in the field. Must have experience in off-road vehicle and vessel operations, maintenance, and mechanics. Must possess experience with MS Office and ESRI ArcGIS Pro for project mapping, planning, and statistics. Must possess a valid Florida Driver's license upon hire and must be retained throughout the duration of employment.
Physical Requirements :
Must be able to work outdoors in the South Florida climate that includes extreme heat, humidity, UV exposure, and severe weather that includes heavy rain and lightning. Expect to encounter and handle dangerous wildlife, including: large mammals/reptiles, venomous reptiles, stinging/biting insects, and noxious plants. The incumbent will be working in and around wetlands, open water ponds/lakes, and deep canals. Must be able to swim. Must be able to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds, unassisted. Drug Screen & Background check required.
