American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management Cedar City Field Office (BLM CCFO), is seeking two Natural Resources members to contribute to the CCFO Integrated Pest Management program and Vegetation Restoration projects alongside BLM Staff. Location Details/Description:

Cedar City, UT The Color Country District Office and Cedar City Field Office are co-located in southwest Utah's Iron County, while managing public land in Beaver County. Characterized by vast acres of sagebrush and pinyon-juniper foothills, the region offers a variety of landscapes ranging from salt desert shrub flats to high mountains with riparian, aspen, and bristlecone pine communities. Mountain ranges include the Mineral Mountains, Wah Wah Mountains, and the Indian Peak Mountain Range. The Field office is home to a variety of species including the Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule Deer, Antelope, Greater Sage Grouse, and Wild Horses. The Field Office is generally quite remote and offers a wide variety of dispersed recreation. The Parowan Gap, a deep, narrow gorge west of Summit, Utah, is renowned as a site of great importance to the Paiute Indians and others for many reasons, including the Fremont era petroglyphs etched on the canyon walls. Position Overview:

The Restoration and Weeds Members will contribute to the BLM CCFO's Integrated Pest Management program and Vegetation Restoration projects. The Cedar City Field Office covers approximately 2.2 million acres of public land with an extensive weed management program. Most of the members term will involve assisting with field work, which may include inventory, monitoring, and treating invasive and noxious weeds with both herbicide and manual control. This position will also provide field and technical support to natural resource staff in the areas of rangeland management, invasive plant management, vegetation monitoring, sensitive plant resources, and habitat restoration. Work will involve a combination of field activities, data collection and management, vegetation identification, project support, and general resource monitoring. The natural resource position provides an opportunity to gain practical experience working with multiple natural resource programs and supporting land management activities across a variety of habitats and public lands. Vegetation Management/Restoration Duties:

Safely and appropriately handle and mix herbicides Identify and treat (herbicide and manual treatment) invasive species using backpack sprayers, handheld sprayers, and UTV mounted sprayers Assist with field surveys and inventories for invasive and noxious plant species. Assist with mapping and documenting weed infestations and treatment areas using GPS, mobile data-collection applications, and GIS tools. Support invasive plant treatment projects, including preparation, field implementation, monitoring, and documentation. Assist with post-treatment monitoring and evaluation of vegetation management projects. Assist restoration activities, including seeding, planting, site preparation, low tech restoration, and monitoring. Safely operate and maintain field equipment, vehicles, and tools used for vegetation management and restoration activities. Support sensitive plant monitoring or survey activities, which may include transects or other standardized field methods, as needed. Assist with collection and organization of sensitive plant location and monitoring information using GPS and GIS tools.

Rangeland and Vegetation Monitoring Duties:

Assist natural resource staff with field inventories and monitoring of vegetation, rangeland conditions, and plant communities using established methods and protocols. Collect and record field observations related to vegetation, soils, ecological site conditions, utilization, and overall site conditions as directed. Assist with rangeland improvement, habitat restoration, and vegetation management projects. Assist with monitoring and documentation of grazing allotments and other land management activities as needed. This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule:

Monday-Friday between the hours of 8am and 5pm.

Position Benefits Living Allowance:

The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $800/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. The living allowance is a fixed rate determined by the BLM and ACE and is not flexible. This position is part of the

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority:

Members serving under this agreement must meet the PLC Eligibility requirements to be considered for this position. Members may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service and 640 hours of service. If the duration of a PLC-eligible term is not long enough for Members to accrue 640 hours of service (~16 weeks), the total hours served at the completion of the term may be eligible to be combined with hours accrued from another PLC-eligible term to meet the 640 hours requirement. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age (You must be between the ages of 16 and 30. Some agencies also interpret these guidelines to include veterans up to age 35) and citizenship. Housing:

Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or BLM.

Housing Assistance:

ACE Members will be eligible for reimbursable housing assistance up to $300 per week. The ACE Member will only be reimbursed for approved and demonstrated housing expenses.

Relocation Assistance:

ACE members will have access to up to $1,000 to be used for eligible relocation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.

Gear Assistance:

ACE members will have up to $750 to spend on eligible gear purchases. Eligible gear for this position includes, footwear (rubber or chemical resistant boots), long sleeve shirts, pants, etc., and must be approved by ACE staff prior to purchase.

Provided Training/Orientation:

ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include BLM orientations and training.

Qualifications Required:

Members must be authorized to work in the United States. ACE does not provide sponsorship for employment visas. Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group. A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request). Members must be 21+ to drive due to ACE's insurance and liability requirements. Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation. Members may not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement. Willingness to obtain pesticide applicator license and use pesticides. Preferred:

Competitive applicants for this position can have relevant academic and/or professional experience in subject areas such as natural resource management, rangeland management, or botany. Ability and willingness to work independently in the field for long periods of time. Experience with ArcGIS programs. Deep interest in environmental restoration.

Physical Demands:

Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike over rough terrain.

Vision Requirements:

Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.

Weight Lifted or Force Exerted :

Frequently moves up to 25 lbs., ability to move up to 50 pounds.

Environmental:

Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.

Noise Environment :

Moderate to high noise such as gas-powered chainsaws and other hand and power tools. Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.

Travel:

This position may require domestic travel within the region.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards:

The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety:

If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the BLM or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the BLM. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the BLM, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to BLM and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
