Job Description
Job Summary Join our team as a Natural Gas Utility Pipelayer / Gas Technician and play a vital role in expanding and installing our underground infrastructure. In this hands-on, outdoor role, you will be responsible for executing new residential and commercial natural gas line installations from the Southwest Gas (SWGas) tie-in points to customer properties. You must be highly proficient in operating trenching equipment and experienced in the safe handling, fusing, and laying of underground gas piping. This position offers a fast-paced, safety-first environment with steady, hands-on fieldwork.
Responsibilities Operate heavy machinery and trenchers safely to excavate narrow trenches for underground gas lines according to strict depth and grade regulations. Install and lay underground natural gas lines (such as PE/Polyethylene pipe and pre-sleeved CSST) from the main SWGas tie-in to meters or structures. Install yellow tracer wire and warning tape accurately alongside all plastic piping to ensure future locate capabilities. Perform pipe fusion , joining, and fitting of underground gas lines using approved mechanical and thermal methods. Conduct pressure tests (air/nitrogen) on newly laid lines to verify system integrity before backfilling. Prepare trench bedding and carefully backfill/compact soil to protect the newly installed lines from damage. Coordinate with utility locators (811) and SWGas inspectors to ensure all installations meet local utility specifications and safety codes. Qualifications Proven experience operating trenchers (walk-behind and ride-on) and mini-excavators in residential or commercial utility settings. Hands-on experience in underground utility piping , specifically laying and fusing natural gas lines. Strong understanding of trench safety, shoring requirements, and regional burial depth regulations. Familiarity with Southwest Gas (SWGas) installation standards and utility tie-in procedures is highly preferred. Ability to read basic site plans, utility maps, and use measuring tools accurately. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (CDL is a plus for moving equipment). Must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform heavy lifting.
