Job Description:
SUNY Schenectady County Community College seeks a full-time Physical Sciences Technical Assistant for the Division of Math, Science, Technology and Health. Reporting to the Dean of Math, Science, Technology and Health, the Physical Sciences Technical Assistant is responsible for the set-up and breakdown of laboratories for all chemistry and physics classes, as well as the preparation of solutions instrumentation that will be utilized during the laboratory sessions, under the direction of the full-time faculty in the respective disciplines. The Technical Assistant supports the faculty and the instruction of students enrolled in laboratory courses and is also responsible for the general cleanliness and preparedness of the laboratories
Responsibilities:
Work with Chemistry and Physics faculty to assure that lab exercises are prepared according to the published laboratory schedules Prepare chemical solutions for Fundamentals of Chemistry, Chemistry I and II and Organic Chemistry I and II laboratories Understand how to operate equipment such as, but not limited to: fume hoods and all of their aspects including the vacuum lines, spectrophotometers, nuclear magnetic resonance, gas chromatographer Prepare computers in the chemistry instrumentation lab for students when they are graphing data and the physics labs when they are doing simulations Set-up and breakdown of all Chemistry and Physics labs Maintain the SDS sheets in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations and maintain other safety and hazardous material information Keep the laboratory a clean and safe environment with regard to chemicals, potential physical hazards of the space, in addition to making sure the benchtops and whiteboards are clean at the conclusion of the laboratory period Ensure that safety regulations and hazardous material handling regulations are posted and followed by instructors and students Catalogue waste materials and communicate with the Director of Facilities to make sure they are properly disposed of Order materials and equipment with the Dean's approval Create and maintain inventory of chemicals (including expiration dates), materials, glassware and equipment that is accessible to other staff Organize and tag old equipment for disposal from storage areas or facilitate its donation to museums or local high schools Run the distillation unit to make deionized water to make solutions for biology and chemistry labs Assist with work in biology laboratories if requested by the Dean Ensure that all equipment is in working order, trouble shoot, repair or arrange for repair of equipment, and to notify the Dean whenever equipment repair or maintenance is required Schedule annual certification of the fume hoods Help to clean and maintain microscopes on a rotating basis Help to prepare chemical solutions for the biology labs, including mild disinfectant for benchtops with alcohol or bleach, whiteboard cleaning solution, or other solutions as necessary Assist faculty and students in research or instructional activities
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a science discipline Minimum of two years of experience working within a laboratory setting Basic computer skills Organized and detail-oriented Must be available to work some evenings and
Saturdays Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry Prior experience working in an academic laboratory setting Willingness to learn new skills
