Overview This is a hands-on product development role responsible for supporting the development, formulation, and improvement of nutritional supplements and wellness products for pet health. The position supports product development from initial concept through formulation, testing, scale-up, transfer to manufacturing, and troubleshooting once in manufacturing.
Essential Functions:
Develop and support the formulation of new pet nutraceutical, nutritional supplement, and wellness products from concept through commercialization. Evaluate ingredient functionality, compatibility, stability, palatability, processing characteristics, and product performance. Develop products across applicable dosage and delivery formats, which may include powders, soft chews, chewable tablets, tablets, capsules, liquids, or other supplement formats. Reformulate existing products to improve quality, performance, cost, manufacturability, ingredient availability, or customer requirements. Research emerging ingredients, technologies, delivery systems, and trends within the pet health and nutraceutical markets. Translate customer, marketing, and business concepts into technically feasible product formulations. Troubleshoot formulation and manufacturing issues related to product consistency, processing, stability, appearance, texture, palatability, or other product characteristics. Identify opportunities to improve formulations or manufacturing processes while maintaining product quality and performance. Develop and maintain product specifications, formulations, manufacturing instructions, and technical documentation. Maintain accurate and complete R&D records, formulation histories, testing results, and technical documentation. Develop products and technical documentation in accordance with applicable FDA, AAFCO, NASC, cGMP, company quality requirements, and other applicable standards, in partnership with Quality and Regulatory. Plan, execute, and document bench-top development, laboratory testing, and pilot trials; support manufacturing trials, scale-up activities, and first production runs. Design, coordinate, and evaluate product stability, shelf-life, palatability, and performance testing; interpret results and recommend formulation or process changes. Collaborate with Quality, Regulatory, Operations/Manufacturing, Procurement, Sales, Marketing, suppliers, customers, and external manufacturing partners to support product development and commercialization activities. Evaluate new ingredients, raw materials, and supplier alternatives for functionality, quality, safety, regulatory suitability, manufacturability, availability, and cost.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Animal Science, Animal Nutrition, Chemistry, Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nutrition, or a related scientific discipline required. 3+ years of experience in R&D, product development, or formulation within pet supplements, pet nutrition, dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, functional foods, animal health products, or a closely related regulated manufacturing environment. Product-development experience in pet supplements, pet nutrition, pet food/treats, animal nutrition, or animal health preferred. Experience with design of experiments, analysis of technical data, and application of results to guide formulation and process-development decisions preferred. Experience formulating multiple delivery formats such as powders, soft chews, tablets, capsules, and/or liquids preferred. Experience managing or supporting multiple product-development projects simultaneously. Understanding of nutraceutical, dietary supplement, pet nutrition, or related manufacturing processes. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot formulation and manufacturing challenges. Ability to interpret technical data and translate findings into practical product-development decisions. Strong project-management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical audiences. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and experience with applicable formulation software, laboratory systems, or product-development systems.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
Ability to adhere to company guidelines, including cGMPs, SOPs and safety procedures. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while supporting trials and production activities. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment when working in laboratory or manufacturing areas. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as required for laboratory or product-development activities. Occasional travel may be required for supplier, customer, manufacturing, or industry-related activities. Position may require extended hours, including occasional nights or weekends, to support production trials, scale-up, product launches, or other business needs. Regularly exposed to noise, moving mechanical parts, and to airborne particles, including strong odors, and some allergens in the manufacturing areas. Pay:
$75,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
