This role oversees the entire product lifecycle, including raw material evaluation, lab-scale compounding, stability and efficacy testing, specification creation, and regulatory documentation, while ensuring alignment with marketing briefs, technical feasibility, and compliance standards. The position requires cross-functional collaboration with Marketing, Regulatory, QA, Purchasing, and Manufacturing teams, and includes lab operations management and hands-on problem-solving for formulation and production challenges. The position is fast paced and requires quick innovation and a demanding schedule with multiple products being launched simultaneously.
Job Responsibilities Research & Development of New Items:
Lead the research, development, and optimization of new cosmetic formulations across various product categories (e.g., skincare, haircare, makeup, body care). Conduct in-depth literature reviews and market research to identify emerging trends, novel ingredients, and innovative technologies. Translate consumer insights and marketing briefs into technically feasible and commercially viable product concepts. Stay abreast of industry advancements, competitor activities, and regulatory changes to inform product development strategies.
Formulation Development:
Oversee new product development lifecycle from product discovery through plant trial Design, develop, and refine innovative and stable cosmetic formulations from scratch, adhering to product specifications, target costs, and timelines, Conduct extensive lab work, including compounding batches, preparing samples, and performing stability testing. Optimize existing formulations for improved performance, cost-efficiency, or ingredient profile. Troubleshoot formulation issues, such as stability problems, compatibility issues, or performance deficiencies.
Raw Material Evaluation:
Proactively identify, research, and evaluate new raw materials, active ingredients, and innovative delivery systems for cosmetic applications. Conduct initial reviews and assessments of new materials for suitability, safety, and potential benefits.
Specification Development & Management:
Develop comprehensive raw material specifications (RMS) and finished product specifications (FPS) for new and existing products. Review and evaluate current specifications to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. Work closely with Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs to ensure all specifications meet internal and external standards. Develop and manage component specifications, design, and testing procedures. Ensuring suitability and compatibility of all packaging for the intended use
Lab Management & Equipment Oversight:
Oversee the daily operations of the R D and Quality laboratory, ensuring a safe, organized, and efficient working environment. Manage and maintain lab equipment, including calibration, troubleshooting, and coordinating repairs. Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records and databases of all experimental work, formulations, and test results. Ensure proper inventory management of lab supplies, raw materials, and components.
Product Performance & Stability Testing:
Design and execute comprehensive stability studies (e.g., accelerated, real-time) to assess product integrity under various environmental conditions. Oversee shelf life studies to assign shelf life to products Identify products for Preservative Efficacy Testing and ensure products are tested and have appropriate preservative levels Conduct efficacy testing (e.g., consumer perception, instrumental analysis where applicable) to validate product claims. Perform compatibility testing with packaging components. Evaluate sensory attributes (e.g., texture, scent, appearance) throughout the development process.
Regulatory Compliance & Documentation:
Ensure all formulations and raw materials comply with relevant national and international cosmetic regulations (e.g., FDA, EU Cosmetics Regulation, Health Canada). Prepare and review technical documentation required for product registration and safety assessments (e.g., PIF, INCI lists). Collaborate with Regulatory Affairs to address any compliance-related issues.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Marketing, Product Development, Packaging, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, and Manufacturing to ensure seamless product development from concept to commercialization. Present research findings, formulation progress, and project updates to internal stakeholders. Provide technical support to manufacturing during scale-up and production trials.
Troubleshooting & Problem Solving:
Identify and resolve technical challenges related to formulation, raw materials, processing, and product performance. Implement root cause analysis for product failures or deviations.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Cosmetic Science, or a related scientific field. 5 years of progressive experience in cosmetic R D and formulation within the personal care or cosmetics industry. Proven track record of developing and launching successful cosmetic products. Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of cosmetic raw materials, their functions, and interactions. Expertise in various cosmetic formulation types (e.g., emulsions, suspensions, anhydrous systems, surfactants). Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and laboratory safety protocols. Solid understanding of cosmetic regulatory requirements (FDA, EU Cosmetics Regulation, etc.). Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Exceptional communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines. Proficiency in relevant laboratory equipment and software. Experience with cosmetic formulations like clean beauty, natural formulations, and Knowledge of scale-up processes and manufacturing principles. Experience with consumer insights and market trend analysis.
