Discover Impactful Work:
The Organic Chemistry Manufacturing department is responsible for delivering premier fluorescent probes and reagents that enable our customers to advance scientific discovery with cellular labeling and detection tools. Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a highly motivated scientist with expertise in Organic Chemistry to join our manufacturing team in Eugene. The successful candidate will have experience in organic synthesis in a manufacturing laboratory. The candidate must be capable of performing bench science activities following established synthesis procedures and developing a personal schedule to complete assigned work on time. A day in the
Life:
Work with the closest attention to personal and co-worker safety and follow all department policies and guidelines related to the operation of process equipment, chemical handling, and waste disposal. Perform multi-step organic synthesis (100 mg to 500 g scale) in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Apply technical ability to complete the processes and procedures. Work independently to complete manufacturing work orders in accordance with a pre-approved chemistry plan. Follow the planned manufacturing schedule. Develop an individual weekly schedule to complete all assigned work on time with expected results. Identify and raise manufacturing issues that yield unexpected results. Collaborate with senior staff to identify and implement necessary corrections to manufacturing and/or testing processes. Participate in the transfer of new products from R D to manufacturing by performing initial work orders with an R D partner and providing feedback for protocol revisions. Crosstrain in other manufacturing departments (particles and quantum dot chemistry and large molecule/dye conjugation chemistry) to develop the ability to flex between departments based on business need. Complete all assigned tasks daily, which may require overtime and flexibility to work varying schedules, including occasional weekends, based on fluctuations in customer demand. Keys to
Success:
Education Bachelor's degree in chemistry or related field with 3+ years of applicable organic synthesis experience required. Master's degree in Organic Chemistry (preferred) with 1+ years of applicable organic synthesis experience. Applicable experience in organic synthesis may be from work in a manufacturing and/or academic research laboratory. Experience, Knowledge, and Skills Experience in organic synthesis, application of air and moisture-free reaction conditions, chromatography methods, and analytical methods to monitor and troubleshoot chemistry processes and determine product quality. Adaptable, eager learner, able to think critically, proactively solve problems, and maintain composure in stressful or ambiguous situations. Receptive to mentoring and feedback, with a desire and motivation to continuously grow and develop both chemistry and leadership skills. Effective people skills in a team-centered work environment and the ability to communicate constructively with peers and leadership. Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to evaluate, prioritize, and complete multiple projects while responding to changing priorities and due dates. Solid technical writing skills, with an ability to document synthetic procedures accurately and succinctly. Physical Requirements / Work Environment The position requires full ambulatory skills and physical coordination sufficient to move about laboratory and office locations; the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch periodically for prolonged periods of time; and manipulate (lift, carry, move, push) glassware and equipment weighing up to 20-40 pounds inside a fume hood and around the lab.
