Job Summary Oversees the operations of FIU's Big Cypress Flume Experiment Project and related operations in the Periphyton Analysis Laboratory with Assistant Research Professor Dr. Kelsey Solomon and Dr. Evelyn Gaiser. Operates with considerable latitude in unreviewed actions or decisions regarding this project. Acts as a liaison with other FIU departments, the Institute of Environment, and partnering organizations including the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians, U.S. National Park Service, Everglades Foundation, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Develops, designs, and conducts the Big Cypress Flume Experiment Project in line with the contracted research plans, reviews progress, and evaluates results. Formulates research procedures for the large experiment and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends and implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques Develops, manages, and conducts as crew chief the standard operating procedures for field collections, instrument and equipment maintenance, and laboratory analyses for this project. Trains field crews for the project in operating equipment such as the project UTV, trailer, environmental monitoring equipment, and experimental infrastructure. Trains laboratory personnel in periphyton processing techniques. Explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations, and outcomes so that field crews can prepare equipment appropriately for field days. Screens and verifies project field and lab data, and develops and maintains Chain of Custody for sample tracking Coordinates data collection and sampling schedules. Conducts analysis of data and interprets and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis. Co-authors publications and may co-present results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/or conferences. Oversees day-to-day operation of project and supervises support personnel including students. Interprets and implements FIU, contractor, and national park policies, including safety guidelines and environmental permitting requirements as they apply to research in Big Cypress National Preserve. May recommend changes on policy and procedures as necessary Serves as the University's credit Card user for departmental transactions that includes travel and purchasing. Ensures compliance and adherence to the University's credit card policies and procedures Perform other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related field and three (3) years of experience or Master's degree and 1 year of experience.
