Job Description

Do you want your field boots in a tallgrass prairie one week, a SE coastal wetland the next, and to be analyzing data for publication the next? We are a fast-moving nonprofit ecological science organization at the cutting edge of geospatial science, carbon crediting, biodiversity markets, and water quality science — and we are looking for a driven and self-directed Environmental Scientist to help us push those frontiers.
THE OPPORTUNITY
This is a high-autonomy, high-impact role reporting directly to the Executive Director and collaborating closely with our Chief Science Officer. You will split your time between field-based ecological research, rigorous data science and visualization, and translating that science into real-world impact —from conducting field assessments to engaging in grant-funded research to contributing to peer-reviewed publications. No two weeks look alike.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Work with the CSO to develop and implement cutting-edge methodologies for biodiversity credits, carbon markets, and water quality metrics. Train in and use a propriety visual data tool "Stratifyx" along with use of GIS and remote sensing for natural resource mapping, evaluation and restoration planning. Hit the field — data collection, sample analysis, equipment management, and occasional multi-day wilderness deployments. Need to be able to lift up to 50 pounds, walk long distances, and be comfortable in inclement weather conditions in remote locations. Conduct high level data analysis utilizing current statistical analysis software. Support project management, client communications, and administration. Collaborate with the CSO on data synthesis and writing for scientific publications and presentations at scientific conferences. Support the Executive Director and CSO in statements of work, bids, and grant proposals. Travel to field sites primarily around the US, averaging 6 days/month of travel but variable depending up season and project demands. Other projects as assigned - this is a very dynamic workplace with multiple scientific projects and calls for consulting. You will be asked to participate on multiple different types of projects simultaneously and need to be able to stay focused and efficient.
WHO YOU ARE
MS or PhD in Ecology, Environmental Science, Soil Science, Forestry, or related field. 4 - 6+ years of professional experience in field-based ecological research. Hands-on GIS/geospatial analysis expertise applied to environmental science work. Comfortable in remote wilderness settings — camping, hauling gear, collecting and organizing data.
Strong communicator:
equally fluent writing journal articles and briefing corporate partners. Has broad ecological experience in multiple regions and ecosystem types. Self-directed, adaptable, and energized by a dynamic nonprofit environment. US passport preferred; open to occasional international project travel. Must have a valid US driver's license.
WHY JOIN US
We are a small, expert team doing work that matters globally. You will have direct influence on how biodiversity is quantified, how cutting-edge mapping tools can be utilized to influence conservation outcomes, and the success of high impact restoration projects — with the freedom to pursue original research alongside mission-driven applied work. If you are energized by applied ecosystem science, wilderness fieldwork and scientific rigor, please apply.
